What's the cheapest RWD car (not truck) on the market today?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Hmmm....the Hyundai Genesis 2.0T when it's on sale for $20K?  Otherwise Mustang  V6 at about $23K??

New Toyo FT-86 should be around that price range too when it comes out....

Are we talking about new cars?  How about the Smart Car?   Isn't that rear wheel drive, starting at around $14K brand new.

Smart appears to be rear engined and rear wheel drive like the original air cooled Beetle.

It could be exciting if you're driving one on a slippery road being surrounded by 18 wheelers.  :)

Ease of production and space...weren't those the reasons?

If FWD is easier to produce then why were almost all cars RWD until quite recently? It seems the switch happened very quickly starting in the late 70s and within less than a decade there were very few RWD cars left.

Technology changes and improves over time. First RWD was easier. Then something happened and now FWD is easier given what we now know.

Traction is a big one too. FWD is much better in ice and snow as the engine weight is over the drive wheels. People got less and less tolerant of getting stuck.

Actually, RWD was always easier and cheaper. FWD won for packaging reasons. Just easier to turn the engine sideways and make it all fit in a small area. Except for the snow traction issue, which is kind of a double edged sword anyway, there are no dynamic improvement for switching to FWD. Actually, all else being equal, I can't think of anything other than snow traction that FWD does better.

The old Beetle was better than any fwd car  for traction in snow.

Which I suppose is why the 911 is such a good rally car.

Yup, rear engine over the rear wheels.  Kinda like FWD backwards but without the torque steer.  :)

I drove a Beetle in snow once. Massive understeer! Some weight under the hood is pretty much a requirement.

Modern traction control systems have eliminated this. I have been driving the G8 all winter (and she has been a nasty one) on a proper set of tires  without an issue.
