Here's the specs from Hyundai -> http://hyundaicanada.com/pages/showroom/Specifications.aspx?model=Genesis%20Coupe

Not sure how they arrived at the 6.6 l/100km for hwy on the 2.0T with manual transmission.   May be a tail wind, going downhill, upshift early, empty road, etc...

I think that is rather easily achieved.  The Genesis has a slippery shape, and as long as you are out of boost, you're just using a fraction of the HP in the small 2.0 engine.  I think it's do-able...but might be a bit boring..

I can get mid 7's doing "my" highway speed, can probably get below 7 in sixth doing 80-90kph. But I'd rather shoot myself in the head.

Highway test does not exceed 70km/h I believe.  So doable at that sped but would take you awhile to get anywhere.

Better don't encourage him. He will get mad for not achieving 6.6, send everything to hell and come back with something around 30L/100km, and asking for advices on a new set of tires, hahaahahahahahaa. :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

At least that's what I would do anyway...  ;D

On Friday evening I drove the Scoob to Canmore, and got some of the worst highway mileage I've seen.  Roof box adds 1.5L/200km or so, but add in an 80+km/h head wind, and blamo, fuel economy is BAD!  We were also making time, so I was trying to keep it at 125kmh, but thanks to the crazy winds, that was a struggle.  Yup, 120-125 was foot-to-the-floor!!!

18L/100km  That is bad, but my buddies X5 4.4 was over 25!

Really? 70kph is considered "highway"?  :o

I knew the fuel economy ratings were pretty much unreal but I didn't realize that. Even 100kph would be less than real world but it would be a lot closer.

Actually, from my experience the Canadian highway rating is pretty spot-on at 100 Km/h if it's not winter and you're not using the AC, without strong winds in your face.

That said, what Wing said is wrong:

The highway test simulates a 16-km trip with an average speed of 77 km/h (48 mph) and a top speed of 97 km/h (60 mph). The test runs for about 13 minutes and does not include any stops. However, the speed varies to simulate conditions on the highway and on rural roads. The test begins from a hot engine start.

The highway test can be summarized as follows:

Test Cell Temperature    20°-30°C (68°-86°F)
Time    765 seconds (12 minutes, 45 seconds)
Length    16 km (10 miles)
Top Speed    97 km/h (60 mph)
Average Speed    77 km/h (48 mph)

So the test reaches nearly 100 Km/h (60 mph to be exact). It only lasts a bit under 13 minutes but includes a few accelerations and decelerations which hurt fuel economy. In real-life, the rating does represent well summer, no AC driving at a constant 100 Km/h. Most people drive faster however and you can expect about a 10% hit if you drive at 110 Km/h instead and even bigger if you drive at 120 Km/h. That's because air resistance is exponential. If you accelerate often to pass other vehicles, you will also hurt your fuel economy.

In other words, the reason why most drivers don't get highway fuel economy is because of the way they drive.

What about at 145?

I know the tone is joke-y but let's see. Since the air resistance depends on speed squared, driving at 145 Km/h instead of 100 should lead to ((145/100)^2= 2,10) an approximative 110 % higher resistance from air. Not all losses are due to air at those speeds, so that doesn't mean 110% worse fuel consumption, but since air resistance is the highest loss at those speeds, I'd guess you'd see about 60 to 70% worse fuel consumption at 145 Km/h instead of 100 Km/h.

So if your car is rated 6,6 l/100 Km on the highway, that would come out at about 10,9 l/100 Km. Driving at 120 Km/h should yield about 25 to 30% worse fuel economy than at 100 Km/h, so about 8,3 to 8,6 l/100 Km. Add 0,3-0,5 l/100 Km for AC use.

I have the same problem with my Rex... too hard to stay off the skinny pedal!  But it is possible to get decent mileage if you drive out of boost, however you have to accelerate at a Grandma's pace.. (no offense to any grandmas out there).  Mine is a 2.0T as well, I'm getting similar to you, around 15L/100 in cold weather but I can go down to 8L/100 on the highway.

Does the Genesis come with a boost gauge?  It's a good economy indicator... I watch it all the time.

Battling headwinds into the mountains at 130 km/h the G8 delivered a respectable 14L/100km. Coming home yesterday the long way around (Trans Canada closed due to avalanche again..) the big red sedan delivered 10.1L/100km. I am a pretty happy camper. Good fuel economy combined with passing performance that was described by my passenger as "H$%^ Sh$!. ;D

This of course offsets the not so good Land Rover....
