1. Convert into .iso, if you don't want any quality loss, a)using ImgBurn, which is a must have app IMO, but it may not work on copyrighted DVDs.
    b) using DVDShrink which is a wonderful little piece of freeware, although not longer developed, it will do very easy editing, such as removal of unwanted content and will allow you to chose audio streams, subtitles and so on. It will also convert the DVD into an .iso file directly.
2. Enjoy playing the files on your WD.

Considering the price of Bluray players these days why no just shell out the $100 for a new one?

I agree. Walmart actually sells a no-name BD player for about $79.00.

Furthermore, I've got a lot of 10 year old DVDs that play just fine (as do my 25 year old CDs)...but I don't have a lot of hard drives that have lasted that long :). When I back things up on HDDs (and I do, I have thousands of photos on HDDs) I usually back them up on three different drives because I don't trust the darn things as far as I can throw them. Yes, old DVDs have been known to rot. But when a DVD goes bad, it doesn't take the rest of your collection with it. More often than not, when an HDD goes for a crap, the whole disc and it's contents are goners.

I got a great Sony BD player at Christmas for $80 reduced from $140.

He doesn't need to convert anything, it is basically a re-packing of a DVD structure into a single .iso file of approx the same size as the original DVD. It takes about 5-10 min each and you can get rid of the trailers, commercials and warnings any retail DVD comes with nowadays.
