BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:04:32 am »
BMW has announced its new "TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine". Key figures: 245bhp, 350Nm, combined mpg 35.7 or 7.9 l/100km (in X1).

This should not come as a surprise to anybody who's been following BMW rumours lately, but I'm sure some people will be shocked and call it heresy and whatever. Personally, I'm glad they've finally come out with it. As long as they'll keep producing the I6 and V8 engines, I'll welcome this addition to their engine line. (Besides, they have always sold I4s over here in Europe, so it's no big deal)

Yay or Nay?

Well, rightly or wrongly, smallish turbo'd fours certainly seem to be the way things are heading. :-\

Interesting. The figures quoted are about the same as an APR stage 1 "chip" on a VW 2.0T but a little less than the most powerful 2.0T sold for general use which I believe is 266 bhp in an Audi.

So it should be a good reliable engine. Maybe they should put it into a 1 series hatchback to sell in NA against the new Focus ST.  I'd like one of those.

Some poster on the forum in the past suggested that 2 litres is the size of a pop bottle not an engine...wrong!

Wouldn't the "most powerful" crown go to Hyundai's 2.0T in the Sonata? 270-ish ?

Twin turbo I4s?  :lick:

I like where this is going!

I'm interested to know how BMW will sell a 5 series with a 2 litre I4 in the States.

I thought it was a twin-SCROLL turbo not twin turbos.

A BMW 520 with that 2 litre would be more powerful and have more torque than an E39 530 with the 3 litre L6 and of course it would be lighter  and hopefully be cheaper than the 6 cyl.
Now if they put their fancy DCT gearbox in it with a manual 6 spd as an option it would be really neat

It would give them a great line of %-ers.   520, 535 and the 550 or maybe skip that and just do an M5 at the top.   245 bhp, 330 ( or close) BHP and a mega horsepower V6 or twin turbo 6  M5

Indeed. For me 'TwinPower' translates in twin turbo, I guess BMW Marketing did their job very well..

I doubt it will be cheaper to produce than the x28i (N52), as it is more complex. Anyhow, the idea of a 4 cylinder engine might not appeal to the typical 5 series buyer.

Simple, by calling it the same name 528i, and selling it at the same or lower price.
95% of the population will not notice the difference.

"The new engine will find it’s home in the small X1 CUV first, and likely the 1, 3, and 5 series as well as the Z4 convertible."

AMG going down in displacement, up in pressure too I believe.

Regardless sounds like this will be a nice engine. Hope the HPFP holds up tho.

No that honour in North America goes to Mitsubishi with the 291HP Evo.

A turbo 4 is usually cheaper or at least the same price as a 6 cylinder but with the advantage of less weight and potential fuel economy, it isn't really that complex but you do have a point about the 4 banger in a 5 series.

Hmm... yeah.  :-\
Only Audi is the one that matches it's real engine displacement.

Unless it says '3.2' on the back since you are really driving a 3.1L V6  ;)
