A person who reads a lot and enjoys it will

1) prefer to have a book in their hand
2) Want a book in their hand because they want to smell it
3) May have an electric device for reading but will prefer the old fashion way

In short, Yes is the answer. lol

My local Chapters closed about 2 years ago. I had told them a few times that unless they had a price matching policy with their own website, they would go the way of the dodo. Oh, well...
I understand it is expensive to run a brick and mortar store and compete with online outlets, but at the same time they don't have to ship one book at a time like the online stores do, so there still got to be room for markup. I wouldn't even mind to pay 10-15% over the online price but not 30-50% they were asking.
It will be a sad day to see the last big box book store close although it is coming, just like with CD sales, photo film and use of "regular" letters.

Yea...I especially feel that way about magazines.  Which is why I spend so much on magazines every month.  But I do enjoy a good book while driving!

I still buy books from time to time.  Lately I've been using the public library.   I have iBooks on iPad too but it's not reading without the risk of paper cuts.  :)

I think there's a place for both realities, depending on which end of the spectrum we're talking about.  Some books, like those with gorgeous images, would be hard to replace with an electronic format.  Then there are the 'junk' books that you would only buy in paperback form, like for going on vacation or while travelling on business.  The amount of space and weight saved is huge if you go electronic.  As with the argument regarding tablet vs reader, it all depends on your lifestyle and preferences.  I definitely would be sad to see books become extinct - then again, I'm old.  Not sure kids today feel the same way.

And I'm trying hard not to picture TenPenny in the bathtub.   :rofl2:

If it helps, there's often a glass of wine or single malt nearby.

I agree.  I like a boiling tub with a cigar and a good magazine.  Barring that, I take a sauna with my magazine...though the magazine usually gets wrecked in the sauna from the heat, humidity, etc...

Since I'm a slow reader I can make a book last longer than most. Personally when it comes to reading, I prefer real books vs e-books and I leave shorter articles/news to computers. I'll even take a book on longer back packing trips and a magazine for short trips.

Carried this one across Iceland.

As to where I buy them, its 50/50. If I know what I already want, I'll order it online but sometimes I just need to browse through the selection which I will do at the store.

I like my Kobo, but I still see a lot of people with a physical book in hand. I love physical books but they always seem to get damaged eventually in my possession. I hate being the cause of damaged books, so Kobo works better form me.

Isn't it going to be pricey to replace the kobo when it gets damaged?

I completely agree (even the Tenpenny thought, shudder  ;) ).  I do it both ways myself: cheap/free easy reads on the Kobo, while the good books that are keepers will be real paper.

Both our kids are voracious readers, with our son in-particular devouring a couple of books a week.  But these generally are not keeper books (except Harry Potter and some others that are actually good), so we are thinking of going digital for him as well.  Also will help keep the clutter out of the house.

The closest I've come to an e-reader is my iPhone, which I'm using to enter this reply.  It's not bad for reading books but not great either.

I do agree that e-readers are the future and at some point I will get one myself. There are more basic issues however.

1:   How much do you read now vs when you were a kid?  I have a nice collection of half finished and unopened books on my nightstand.  Is it worth the money to have the same problem electronically when I can't finish what I've got now?

2:   What about libraries for the ones that aren't keepers?
