2012 Mazda5 GS; Day 1
« on: January 05, 2011, 04:35:54 am »

We've barely begun 2011, and James is already testing a 2012 model, this one the redesigned Mazda5 "mini-minivan." Though not as strong a value as the larger Dodge Grand Caravan, he thinks this nimble people carrier offers exactly what many families need.

Do they still have  a coin holder behind the steering wheel. I like that little cubby for storing coins. There were 2 of them in the old mazda 5. I can't seem to tell from the posted picture

You can't even look at a 2011 Mazda5 on the Mazda.ca web site. Does this mean Mazda Canada will skip the 2011 model year and intro the 2012 sometime this calendar year? I'm happy to wait a few months for a six speed!

When I test drove a 5 a few years back, every time I shifted into 3rd gear I turned off the fan. Have they moved the gearshift back a little bit?
'Cause you can only drive down Main St. so many times

There is no 2011 Mazda5, I believe this goes on sale this month.

This has got to be one of the most smartly packaged and priced family haulers on the market today.  I'm really looking forward to your driving impressions with the bigger engine and 6 speed.

Mazda must sell a lot of black vehicles across the board.  It's the only colour that manages to tone down that silly guppy-faced mug to a tolerable level.

My wife and I test drove the previous 5 a while back and liked it quite well.  Our impression of the rearmost two seats, however, was that they were basically uninhabitable for adults or even any kid that had graduated grade 5 or so.  Not much storage at all when those seats were occupied, either.  I'd be interested in hearing whether this new one is any better in that respect.  Yes, I know there are a ton of larger vans out there - but stil....

To me Mazda5 was either 4 people and cargo or 6 people and no cargo (or very little).

+1

I leased one back in 2005 when they first came out. Very fun to drive if you can live with the limitations.
The 4-speed auto was a big let down for the engine, and the lack of room in the back with the 3rd row up was disappointing.
Looking forward to the driving impressions with the new engine and 6-speed. It's a nice package and should do well for Mazda.

6 people, yes.  6 adults, no.  It's a 4 + 2 in much the same way as many a sporty coupe is a 2 + 2.  For people who actually need that space, I suspect it was a tough sell as a 6 seater in much the same way as a Genesis Coupe would be a tough sell as a 4 seater.

You are right. More like emergency seats for slim adults. I can fit, but I would't be comfortable for more than a short drive.

....or fold down one of the back seats and carry 5 and some cargo.

Wonder why the Ford C max will have the hideaway 2nd row seat while this does not. Especially given that the "karakuri"(sp?) design is essentially a Mazda invention if I am not mistaken.

I agree - i guess i am going to have to get over the bugs bunny look one of these days - it looks like it is here to stay, and i do like how the Mazda drives.

Wonder how it will stack up to the new Ford coming out. I personally think this is the ideal family sized vehicle, enough room (for a fam of 4), good on gas and some decent driving dynamics.

Wing - since you drove the new Ford - how would you say it compares?

my buddy bought a new 5 last year (i think it was a 2009)...he loves it.

while it is "smaller" than other vans, that's what he liked...improved ride and handling, and decent fuel economy...also, he bought a manual transmission, which i don't think any other "minvan" really offered.
