What Music Media Do you Use ?
« on: December 31, 2010, 03:12:37 pm »
Most of the new vehicles out there now have much better stereos than just a few years ago. More and more of them offer conductivity for I pods, USB drives, and mini jacks for everything else. Surius & XM are built in to most as well.  So the good ol CD ...well does anyone use those things any more? maybe as a MP3..  Years ago I installed a Pioneer AVIC in my 2005 Avalanche.. I did this so I could have my Surius "built in" And Nav too.  It was /is awesome !  I did not have my I pod at the time so I wasn't concerned. I have 2500 songs on it now and I use it.  I'm just curious as to what everyone uses now.  I'm thinking that soon the manufactures will stop putting CD / MP3 players in cars... just a "muti-media" center..  Pioneer has just such a unit ..

My Corolla has a pretty standard Toyota audio unit in it. It sounds pretty decent actually but it's nothing special. It does have AUX which I use with my iPod. But most of the time I just use an MP3 CD with about a dozen albums tucked away on there and select whatever I'm in the mood for. I don't think I've ever played a "real" (REDBOOK audio) CD that wasn't MP3s in folders.

Sirius, 250GB USB hard drive, and Bluetooth streaming from iPhone is what I typically stick with.  I doubt I'll ever put another CD in again ever.

Mostly XM in my case, Cds for the sound quality and occasionally MP3s from a USB stick that I can plug right in, and that's a base sonata  :)

I've got a USB key I leave in the glove box with a bunch of music on it. Works great. :)

My JVC KW-XR810 plays from CDs, Data CDs, Bluetooth streaming, USB memory sticks, any mp3 player via USB or mini-plug and has full iPod control ability built in. It also has inputs for HiFi radio and Sirius, but I don't use those. Most of the time I use a 32gig iPod Touch with my entire music library on it or a 4gig USB stick. Amazing, to me at least - couldn't even have dreamed of stuff like this just a few years ago. Sorry about the crappy cellphone pics.

Is that a Mic I see? Odd that they didn't incorporate it into the face of the unit, rather than leaving it hanging out like that... but I guess they figured it would pick up voices better this way?

Yes that's a cool unit... Have a look at this photo of my AVIC install .. you will see the mic for the BT just above the shifter,  and my USB on the dash to the right of the climate control.

Happy New Year!

Yeah, that's a mic hanging there. You can turn it to face whoever's doing the talking, so maybe that's why they did it this way. I don't even notice it anymore.

I got this head unit at Future Shop on sale for $299.99. It cost another $100 or so for the install and about $50 for adapters and such, with taxes the final bill was just under $500. It's a great unit, the sound is amazing even with the Versa's stock speakers. It's a massive improvement over the stock radio, I'll say that much.

That's a great idea. My Vibe has no line-in but it does have a CD player, which I've never used as no regular CD's anymore.

Not crazy about aftermarket decks since a couple of friends had their cars broken into for them.

Currently using Sirius satellite radio and will continue to as long as I get a deal on the pricing or they stay in business. Once that changes I'll add an iPod adapter. I also have a few regular CDs and one filled with mp3 in the car for when I want to listen to something specific.

Sirius in the GTI and the CD changer filled with:
An MP3 of the Beatles complete repertoire and 5 other discs.

Fit... whatever mrs tpl puts in the cd player.

FM radio and whatever CDs I have in the car. Never jumped on the ipod fad -- don't need music that bad to justify the effort and expense of duplicating my collection on to lossy mp3s.

Happy New Year Everyone !
Thanks for all the replies.....It's cool to learn what folks like or don't like in the way of tunes for the car.  I've had many a trip with no music.. if the wifes with me and we like to talk.. But I have to have tunes for my 5 + hour drive to where I work.  My first choice has aways been Siurus Sat radio. I have had a life time subscription  for over 8 years now.  And I have a Pioneer single din head unit that I've put in my commuter vehicles using the Siurus universal tuner and Pioneer module. I've had this in my Matrix, and in the Escape.. Nice and tidy.. no wires. The whole set up was purchased from  crutchfield.ca    However the new Santa Fe has XM !  and XM 's satalites are low in the sky.. not good in the mountains.  How I wish I could just change out the head unit.. But in all these new cars with steering wheel controls and Blue tooth ..you can't mess much with the factory stuff. Sigh. :(

I think XM and Sirius merged into XM Sirius.
