The 1-Series M has potential to be the spiritual successor to the E30 M3.  A car that enthusiast buyers autocross one day and drive to work the next.  Meant to appeal more to well-off youths than typical BMW luxury car buyers.  Will it be cheap enough and brilliant-handling enough to live up to that potential?  Let's see.  But there's potential.

Now that you mention it, the Camaro convertible is solidly in the "meh" category for me too.

I think the 1 Series, particularly the M1 is butt-ugly.  And nothing special about it.  Traditionally, "M" badged cars had, at least, a unique engine.  Not hotness here...and downright fugly.

The Camaro is not bad at all....more of a significant car for 2011 than a "hottest" car IMO...

^ I'm with you Ron, the 1 Series does absolutely nothing for me whatsoever.  I know it's a great performer, namely the M1, however that's all out the window for me when I can't stand the look of it.

I'd be a little, teeny bit more forgiving if it at least had some special powertrain....

I hate Forbes slideshows.

Here's the list for people who don't want to bother:

Aston Martin Rapide (is this part of the list or not?)
Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI Quattro
BMW 1 Series M Coupe
Bugatti Veryon 16.4 SS
Chevrolet Camaro Convertible
Ferrari 599 GTO
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera
Lamborghini Jota
McLaren MP4-12C
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster
Porsche 911 GT2
Range Rover Evoque
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

The 1-Series M is a car that is made ENTIRELY of wheel arches and greenhouse.  Nothing else.  Not for everyone, but I like it.

True.  But traditionally, M cars weren't SUVs.  I see the X5M and X6M to be a bigger (har har) dilution of the M badge than a sports coupe with a retuned N54 and a chassis designed to be, in BMW's words, "faster than its engine."

Edit: the E30 M3's 2.3L inline-four was a tuned version of the 320's engine.  It wasn't a new-from-the-ground-up engine either.  The E30 was first and foremost about the chassis.

^^Yea, but those ugly M Suvs at least had 500HP and 555TQ from twin turbo V8s which made them somewhat unique. The 1 Series has a run of the mill I6 TT found in the 1 Series and 3 Series.

Ah the R8 spyder really is pure sex.  If I had 200k to blow, I don't think I would think twice...arch okay maybe the 911turboS would be on the radar.

Didn't edit it fast enough.  The 1-Series M has a retuned N54 with more power than the 135i.  The E30 M3 had a retuned 2.3L inline-four with more power than the 320, but the same basic block.  The E30 was first and foremost about the chassis.  This may be a return to that heritage.

Marginally more power.  Less than a $500 tune would get you....

For the M1 (yeah use M1. That was then, this is now and nobody is going to confuse the two) I was hoping for a striped down, normally aspirated but beefed up, pseudo-homologation special. This, not so much.

Oh yeah, that it sure is.  It's one of the most sexiest vehicles on the market today IMHO.  Have you had the pleasure of driving one yet?

Twin turbo versus single turbo.  N54 versus N55.  335 horsepower versus 300.

You're always quick to say that with [insert less expensive car here] and [insert mods here], you can make a car faster than [insert more expensive car here].  I'm sure with $500, you could mod a Dodge Aries to be faster than an R35 GT-R.  You're CTC's own McGuyver.  But not everyone wants to mod their car.  That's why car companies offer performance models in the first place.

And most importantly, it'll take a lot more than $500 to make a 135i handle like a 1-Series M.

My point being...IF I was to buy an M car...I want something special.  I want something that I can't do for $500, especially considering the engine.  Certainly for the premium they charge, I would expect some better handling.  But I would also expect something better in the engine bay.

And it's not like dropping $500 for an ECU tune is a rare "McGuyver" type thing that requires any special skill.  Loads of people who decidedly ARE NOT DIYers do a chip for their , 1 Series, 3 Series, GTI, WRX, Jetta diesel, etc precisely because it is so easy and effective a mod.  In fact, several people here have done that.

We'll disagree.  The M1 falls very short..in looks and uniqueness to other Ms.  And I might go as far to say it does a disservice to other M cars.

And there's no way I could make an Aries rock the house for $500.... :rofl2:

Drove it twice at test fest, took it on the track for 30 min, amazing machine.

911 turbo was faster and the sls too but the r8 was by far the most fun.
