Twin turbo versus single turbo. N54 versus N55. 335 horsepower versus 300.
You're always quick to say that with [insert less expensive car here] and [insert mods here], you can make a car faster than [insert more expensive car here]. I'm sure with $500, you could mod a Dodge Aries to be faster than an R35 GT-R. You're CTC's own McGuyver. But not everyone wants to mod their car. That's why car companies offer performance models in the first place.
And most importantly, it'll take a lot more than $500 to make a 135i handle like a 1-Series M.
My point being...IF I was to buy an M car...I want something special. I want something that I can't do for $500, especially considering the engine. Certainly for the premium they charge, I would expect some better handling. But I would also expect something better in the engine bay.
And it's not like dropping $500 for an ECU tune is a rare "McGuyver" type thing that requires any special skill. Loads of people who decidedly ARE NOT DIYers do a chip for their , 1 Series, 3 Series, GTI, WRX, Jetta diesel, etc precisely because it is so easy and effective a mod. In fact, several people here have done that.
We'll disagree. The M1 falls very short..in looks and uniqueness to other Ms. And I might go as far to say it does a disservice to other M cars.
And there's no way I could make an Aries rock the house for $500....
