When is a Car Considered a Beater?
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:47:18 am »
Is it when you no longer care how it looks and stop washing it?

Or when you perform only repairs that are necessary to keep it on the road.

How about when you're driving that POS into the ground and it's not gonna see another dime from your wallet!

Our car is 9 years old, 210,000 km on it and realistically has a ton of serviceable life left.  Mechanically it's in great shape.  Cosmetically, it's pretty rough.   There's the typical Mazda rust showing up in the usual places, there's a large number of dings in the sheet metal courtesy of careless people.   Earlier this week the wife scraped the side of the passenger door on a wall ( ::)) at the mall.  I didn't even bat an eye.  4 years ago I would have lost it.

So while my car isn't perfect I don't consider it to be a beater quite yet.   Plus I still enjoy driving it.

How do you define a "Beater"?  (Paging Arthur Dent....)

.....

You've hit on many aspects Tortoise. The one that resonates with me the most is not going ballistic is you get a scratch, stone chip etc.

If I have another car to drive, then THAT'S when I think of it as a beater...despite the fact I still like to drive the P5 with 250 or so on it.

When I was changing the tires, I noticed, not surprisingly, some of the bushings are cracking.  Man...how much would it cost to go through and replace all that stuff?

A car is a beater when you can get parts at Canadian Tire?

It's a beater when you can treat it like crap and don't care.

Even with a new car this would not get me excited anymore

Have to agree with that

When its costs less the average pair of your wife's shoes ...
I think my shoes cost more but I only have about 6 pairs compared to 50 or more my wife would have

I guess that depends on your wife's tastes.

We went to a wedding in France (not mine thank goodness) and the bride's shoes were $7,000.   :o

I had a instant imagine of you doing the Lindberg bit...  Oakville,Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec city. Then  Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, across the channel to Le Bourget and off to the wedding.  But I guess not.  Pity.

You have me mistaken for someone with courage!

I did make it to Le Bourget to see the Concordes though.  I just sat and looked out on the airfield and tried to soak in all the history made there.  Lindburgh, Concordski, Paris Air Shows...

Here's one of the coolest shots I took there:

It's a beater when you don't mind parking near the front door with the other Walmartians.  Somehow, if I had a '74 Olds with mismatched doors & fenders, I still don't think I could do that.

It's not really a beater until filling the gas tank doubles the value.

You purchased that car the same year the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup for the last time.

Naw, that would make it a historic classic....almost a Museum piece  :rofl2:

In snow areas you would have a nice car and a beater for winter due to salt and slush etc.
