Side mirrors that swing in
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:05:05 am »
Which vehicles have this option? Is there an acronym for this option?
I think some Mercedes vehicles have them. Others?

A lot of cars have them.  They usually just list them as folding mirrors.  My Subie has them as did my RX-8, Cobalt, Alero, etc.

They come standard when you order the left rear fog light option.   ;)

I think he's referring to side mirrors that automatically swing in...not just one's that are hinged and capable of swinging in.  Almost all mirrors are capable of this.

To add further complication, are you referring to the mirrors that angle in and down when the car is in reverse so you ca see the curb?  I've only seen this on a BMW 3-Series.

Geez Railton, this thread is more vague than your "what car should I buy?" nightmare.

That was possible in older Passats too. But then it somehow disappeared.

For the record I think he's talking about power folding mirrors, and those as TG mentioned usually come with that rear fog light. ;D

I've seen them on the current C-class. I believe the old Acura TL (last 1-2 production years) had them too as well as some Lexus models.

Power folding side mirrors is what I too think they are referred to in the spec sheet.

Oh, yeah, Vovlo has them as does some GM trucks.

Folding mirrors, with the exception of trucks, are becoming less common than they were 10 years ago.  The seam disrupts the aerodynamics, and creates wind noise and drag.

I was really susprised to see that my Sonata doesn't have folding mirrors at all, I always assumed they always were! It doesn't really matter to me as we don't have a garage, and the only time I can remember folding the mirrors on any of my cars is when we go on a ferry, which has happened twice in the last 5-6 years, so no big deal.

Power folding mirrors.

I think most/all so-called 'premium' brands have them as an option.

Both our Sienna and Forest have manual folding side mirrors, hardly ever use this feature though, not even on the ferry.  Power ones are yet another power thing to go wrong; I have seem lots of Ford P/U with their mirrors folded in when going off the ferry, and the driver struggling to get at least one out.

Sorry Gang - working today...as opposed to the rest of ya's. ::)
Anyways, yes - PFSM (Power Folding Side Mirrors) or PFASM (Power Folding Articulated Side Mirrors) ;D
I didn't think they were that popular. I know the Infiniti G does not have them unless they've just come out with that on the 2011's.

I've got them on my BMW and I use them far more than I thought I would. Mostly when I park on the street.

Manual folding mirrors are certainly preferable on any vehicle.

Oddly enough, with all the drive thrus, etc., damaged mirror assemblies are not that common.  This is one item that is a no brainer to source at a wrecker.  Average cost for a fixed heated and remote 2007 forward Camry is $150.  A couple of hours to put it in; the average stooge is looking at $400. tax in.  Although if it was the folding type, you'd be only looking at some missing paint.
