The five best-engineered cars on sale today?
« on: December 19, 2010, 04:28:35 am »
(Borrowed this idea from a thread SoichirosHeroes made at Temple of VTEC, but didn't want to borrow it without proper attribution).

So, of the cars on sale today, what five do you think are the best-engineered and why?  Obviously, "best engineered" can mean different things to different people; you decide what it means for you, but be sure to explain your choices.

For me, it's these five (before anyone screams bloody murder, I left off the Leaf and Volt because they're so new I haven't really gotten a chance to see how they do in the hands of the general public).

5.  Chevy Corvette (base):  People often say "built to a price" like it's a bad thing, but what Chevrolet pulled off with the base C6 Corvette is impressive.  It doesn't have any fancy engine technology or suspension technology, but what it does have is mind-boggling power and handling at a price that's darned-near workable to the middle class (at least as a once-in-a-lifetime treat).  The performance gap over similarly-priced performance vehicles isn't as wide as it was when the C6 was introduced, but even when the C6 as long in the tooth as it is, it's still the fastest car around a racetrack for under US$50,000.  By a wide margin.

4.  Toyota Prius:  I love to hate this car.  But at the end of the day, it's amazing the sort of practicality and fuel-efficiency this delivers for your typical urban or dense-suburban individual or family, at a price that's barely more than a typical midsize sedan.  For those who don't care about the adrenaline-and-endorphin side of driving, and who live in urban or semi-urban areas, it just makes a TON of sense.

3.  Ford Fiesta:  How the hell did Ford make a car this cheap feel this expensive?  And how the hell did Ford make a car this light (with the fuel economy and agility that comes with a 2500-lb curb weight) feel this solid?  For being a lil' paradox on wheels, the Fiesta earns a spot on my top five.

2.  Honda Element:  Hold on hold on hold on...hear me out.  Yes, it's funny-looking.  Yes, its fuel economy is unremarkable.  Yes, it's overpriced in Canada (it sells for $20k and change down here).  Yes, Honda is discontinuing the car after its eight-year run.  But this car is absolutely, truly, utterly brilliant.  It's like what happens what someone said "how should we make truly sensible vehicle if we throw all expectations and tradition in the trash bin?"  The interior is brilliant.  No-slip rubber floors and waterproof fabric on the seats?  Now it doesn't matter whether you've got a vomiting infant in back or a couple of muddy middle-school soccer stars; the interior wipes down and is good as new.  The rear-suicide doors, combined with the giant front doors, create a hole in the side of the car at least as big as a minivan's sliding door would create.  Perfect for loading babies in infant seats.  Or stepping into the car to help a toddler with the straps of his carseat (and did I mention it's so roomy inside you can darn near stand up in the space between the two rows while you're fixing those straps).  Or shoving big ol' TV boxes in--boxes that would never fit nearly as comfortably in a CRV.  And speaking of hauling big objects, the rear seats can not just pop out of the vehicle to turn it into a utility van, but can fold up to the sides of the vehicle, so you don't even have to leave them behind (you don't always leave home in the morning knowing you're going to have to haul a motorcycle...and yes, you can park a motorcycle inside the Element).  The clam shell tailgate isn't a class exclusive, but it's still a rarity, and it's as useful as can be.  For going above and beyond on the practicality front in a way that everyone should be doing with family vehicles and nobody IS doing with family vehicles, the Element wins a place on the list.

1.  Nissan GT-R:  Yes, it had a first-model-year transmission issue (that, honestly, had more to do with crappy Nissan warranty policies than the car itself.  And it got remedied after the first year.  Launch control is back for 2011 with no warranty woes  Yes, it drives itself.  It shifts better than any human could and distributes power amongst the four wheels on a twisty road better than any human could.  But let's stop and think about this for a second.  This is a car that "drives itself"--and drives itself as fast as a Porsche 911 Turbo that costs more than twice as much.  It's a car so brilliantly fast that conspiracy theorists are still claiming that its Nurburgring lap times are as fake as the moon landing.  This is for cars what SkyNet is for government computer servers.  It may not be "soulful," it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's engineering pornography on four wheels.

 rear-suicide doors

What is more dangers then those doors  :nono:

it's so roomy inside you can darn near stand up

But you are are only 5ft tall  ;D

I think the Bugatti Veyron deserves a spot on that list. Say what you will about it, but there's no denying the level of engineering that went into that car. And not just because it's the fastest car in the world, or the first 1000+ hp production car, but because it does all that while still being a true GT car.

Sure, there are faster cars... but they're just faster. The Veyron is mind-bogglingly fast and manages to be a real car at the same time.

Of course, for the entry price, it had damn well better be the best engineered car on the planet... :D

Great list, only disagree with the element which is no longer on sale in Canada anyways... Once the 2010 stock is depleted anyways.

If the Vette isn't cheap in Canada, then replace it with the Mustang.  Cheap speed without cheapness is just silliness.

Demo--I thought long and hard about the Veyron as my #1, because it is AMAZING, but ultimately I didn't include it for a reason.  You can do a lot of amazing things when you have essentially-unlimited resources.  The GT-R costs only 5% as much as the Veyron (seriously) but is far, far, far more than 5% as impressive.  So at the end of the day, I'm more impressed by the GT-R.  But I hear where you're coming from.

It’s a bit pedestrian but the 3.5 V6 put out by Toyota has to make some kind of list.  270 h.p. and great fuel economy?  It’s got my vote…

Let me add one less obvious car to the list. Not a car I have any interest in at all, but I really admire the engineering that went into it. Incredibly light for it's size, roomy and wondrously efficient, it does nothing new, but it does everything incredibly well at it's price point. The car? The Hyundai Sonata

2011 GT-R - 0-60 in 3.0 seconds......need not say more
2011 Mustang GT- The 5.0 with 412hp and 390 ft/lbs torque certainly deserves to be on the list.....especially at this price point.
2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T - The power of a V6 with the fuel economy of a 4 cyl.  Well done
2011 Nissan Leaf - While some might disagree, IMO, this full on EV is a game changer in the automotive industry
Bugatti Veyron -  Like another member mentioned, this vehicle is an engineering marvel and there is no way I can leave it out of my list.  A work of engineering art.

If the S2000 was still being made, it would also make it onto my list.

Why the Leaf on the list?
Should not it be replaced with  http://www.teslamotors.com/models/specs

^ Great addition, I completely forgot about the Tesla.  Unfortunately, the Tesla is simply out of reach for the average consumer though.  It certainly shouldn't retract from it's engineering marvel though.  Great choice.

Agree 100%. As a technological showcase, the Veyron is impressive. But the GT-R takes the same sort of engineering and makes it applicable and relevant... the Veyron is an engineering masterpiece, but it's price makes it so unattainable that it's almost a "so what" level.

As in, we can send a man to the moon... but that doesn't mean anything to most of us. Whereas the GT-R is attainable by mere mortals, so it does mean something to us.

Totally get it. And I agree, for that reason the GT-R is the more impressive piece of engineering.

There is an old saying " Any engineer can make a water pump for a Rolls but it takes a really good engineer to make one for a Chevy"

On that basis it might be that a Yaris, a Fit or a Hyundai would be the best engineered cars around.

I agree with the Veyron.  It is a much more technical challenge for the engineers.

If you push one metric (cost or performance) too hard it takes true skill.

Designing the gearbox or diffs for the Veyron must be insanity. I bet the engine was relatively simple (it isn't like they had to squeeze all 1000 HP out of a 3 litre).
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

It's not just getting the power, but also making the engine smooth and lush around town. Getting 1000+ HP out of a 3.0 is possible, yeah, but it's not an engine any sane person would want in a road car, I don't think (I'm thinking of formula one engines here...).

Not disagreeing - I think the engine probably was one of the simpler components. Just speaking to the accomplishment of making an insanely fast car that's also a luxury car.

I recall one of the engineers on the Veyron talking about how designing gearboxes to handle the power wasn't all that hard. The tough bit was designing gearboxes that could handle the power and last 100 000 miles.

Hell, even the challenge of designing a car that can reach speeds as high as the Veyron does is incredible. At those speeds, every extra km/hour is a huge struggle against physics...

This is a fair point. Mitlov included the Fiesta on his list for similar reasons, and I think it's true. Being able to design a car that sells for $14 000 and will last 500 000km (as I expect a Yaris or Fit too) with pretty minimal service (i.e., just regular maintenance) is an accomplishment, too.

As for the Veyron's high speed.
IIRC the aero was difficult as well. I think most aircraft, military or commercial take off at far less than 200 mph.
Enough downforce to stop it being an aircraft, but not so much that it destroyed the tires  and, at the same time, an acceptable "look" to the people who'd buy one and drive it.  Not just aero on a flat surface either... one advantage F1 designers have is that they know all the places on all the tracks where there can be an angle of attack change and how big it is and at what speeds. A road car is much more difficult at 200 mph ( or much less for that matter) coming to the top of a slight rise and getting a bit nose up into a breeze and over you go.

I sooooo expected the Civic Si to be on that list! I'm disappointed in you, Mitlov...

I personally wouldn't go quite that far about the Element considering its limitations, only 4 seater and I definitely wouldn't like having "almost-suicide" rear doors with kids old enough to get in and out of the vehicle themselves. Sliding doors would have been much better to both provide the huge opening AND ease of use, IMO. And I've driven an Element a few years ago, wasn't that impressed. Felt like I was driving one of those big Canada Post trucks, or an Econoline. Also felt underpowered back then, but that may have changed in recent years. With that said, I still liked the Element and wished it wasn't discontinued. It deserved a new iteration to see what else Honda could do with it.

1) VW GTI - The GTI is on the list because it's a well engineered car overall.  The engine is powerful while being fuel efficient.  The handling is composed without being overly stiff.  The car is maneuverable, I'd even say nimble, yet when cruising on the highway it is smooth and stable.  Anybody can make a powerful car that handles well. Anyone can make a fuel efficient car that is nimble.  VW has somehow managed to make both cars in one.

2)  Ferrari 458 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbML_lrq_d4

Gotta wave the Porsche flag a bit

911 Turbo S:
0-100kph in 3 seconds with PDK and launch control
530hp
11.6 litres/100km

Most impressive is that it could be a daily driver.

Solid addition - (most) Porsche vehicles offer an amazing level of performance and frugal fuel consumption, Cayenne not included...but then, it's not a real Porsche.
