Buying a Mattress
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:49:52 am »
It's time for a new bed.  Does anyone have any brand recommendations, experiences to pass along?

The pillow-tops I've experienced in hotels have been comfy, but I've read that the pillow tops go flat long before the mattress is done.  I've been on a firm mattress until now and I'm thinking plush might be the way to go.

haggle like MAD.  Got a top of the line serta (not serta but whatever the heck their premium line is) at sleepcountry for better than half the list price.  It was like $5000 for the pair ended up paying like $1200.  Markup is crazy on mattresses.

We bought a new matress this summer.  Pillow tops are stupid hot.  We bought at Sleep Country.  They have an exchange priviledge and we took advantage of it...

Yes!  They are!  My mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest, bought in 1996 - extra firm, no pillow top (there weren't any back then).  Added a foam layer to cushion me, and it breathes perfectly well.  The mattress is still firm and fine after all these years - no issues whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure there have been mattress threads here before.

Yes, there have been.  I must have misspelled mattress when I searched the first time.   :shake: :-[

Pillow top are great.  Had ours for about 7 years now and the best sleeps ever.  You sink down in them a bit and it does tend to leave an indentation over time.  So I mark each end, top and bottom, of the mattress Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, then flip the mattress at the end of each season.  That way it gets even use.
I learned this trick from my son when he worked at a high-end hotel.

Hmmm, time to flip that mattress soon.

I tried Firm and Plush today and I think the latter is the way to go.
