Test Drive: 2011 Infiniti G25x
« on: December 17, 2010, 03:05:27 am »

Starting at $36,390, the new Infiniti G25 is "certainly not a stripped down G37" says editor, Greg Wilson.  Its 2.5-litre V6 is "lively and free-revving" and it is very well equipped. "Canadian consumers will appreciate the available all-wheel drive," he says.

I know this kind of pricing strategy is widespread throughout the industry but I'm always annoyed at cars that require 2,3 or 4 thousand dollar option packages in order to get one or two features you want. To see a car advertised at 36K only to find it's really 50K "with stuff" leaves me a little sour.  (sort of like those elusive $39 a month cell phone plans that always seem to end up costing more like $100  ::) )
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

This in reply to the slip n grip version of this model. Any Subaru model with a turbo or the H6 would run circles around this in snow, rain, or just plain warm dry roads.

With 40k, I would get the A4 with quattro instead of this with more torque and relatively same HP.

And performance-wise, its only about 3-4k from base model before I can get the 370Z.

I've taken one out for a test drive and came away fairly impressed.  Mine was the AWD / automatic version.  The engine and transmission were very well matched and the engine had a lively, zingy feel to it.  Ride and handling were both excelent. But ultimately, I was left a bit underwhelmed by the lack of power for the price.  The manual / RWD version might be more agreeable - and certainly the price is that much more appealing.  But I'm told that they pretty much won't be stocking those - which is as close as you'll ge to an acknowledgement that the RWD model exists purely for advertising purposes.

Infiniti didn't really think this through.  This car has been missing in their lineup for a long time, and now that it's here, we are not impressed.  All of it's competitors offer a manual transmission, as any sport sedan should, especially one with a smaller displacement.  To make matters even worse, they don't even offer a coupe entry, I can forgive the lack of convertible, but a coupe is need to compete properly with BMW.  The price isn't great either, it is not cheaper but any means than the competitors it faces in the article.

And it's not much cheaper than the G37x, which gives you more.

G25x Sedan Automatic 7 Speed $40,450
G37x Sedan Automatic 7 Speed $43,450

Lets hope Cadillac doesn't make the same mistake when it brings it's car slotted below the current CTS, it should have a manual option, and coupe as well, and make sure it's at least $4,000 cheaper than the car (CTS) above it.

Do you get the exact same equipment from the G37x as the G25x? If so, I'm with you. It's a no-brainer to pay the extra $2k-3k for the much bigger engine.

Not only do you get a bigger engine, but also there is vurtually no fuel economy penalty.
So the G25 looks like a flop to me. Entry level only makes sense with a significant price advantage which is not the case here.

Agreed, the G25x makes little sense, compared to the G37x. But the base G25 (non-X) is well-priced and makes a lot of sense. It compares very favourably to the BMW 323i, and I'm guessing it comes with more features as standard than does the Bimmer.

Without looking at the standard options in the US, it seems once again, we pay a premium for the same car.  :'(  Too bad, it would have been on my shopping list if it was closer to the US price.

Infiniti today announced a new addition to the popular Infiniti G Line, the G25 Sedan, which features a 2.5-liter V6 engine. It is scheduled to go on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in September, joining the Infiniti G37 Sedan, G37 Coupe and G37 Convertible. It will have a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price* (MSRP) of $30,950 USD

I will be in the entry-level premium market in 3-4 years, and Infiniti will remain off the radar unless they add a stick to the base car.  When even Cadillac offers a stick, you have a serious image problem with enthusiasts.

Hmmm..... $6,000 for the privilege of buying here. Is Infiniti Canada really that much more inefficient than the US arm?

imo, the g25x makes sense when compared to a loaded acura tsx or a lexus is250.
however, it fails in that the price difference between it and the g37(x) is too narrow.  if the price margin was $5-8000, then yeah, it'd be a winner.

i don't really know whether it will be successful in the marketplace, and it seems a couple years too late to the game.  had it come out at the same time the rest of the line was introduced, maybe.....

Infiniti will always come with more features than Lexus/BMW/Mercedes as they are not in the same segment.  IMO they are in the same category as Acura/Cadillac/Audi.

Funny that Acura gave the TSX a V6 to move it upmarket, and the Infiniti gave the G a smaller engine to move it downmarket but neither the TSX V6 nor the G25 really make sense at this point, this late in their respective product cycles with their respective model line-ups.

That's the first time I've ever heard that one.  Please explain to me how Infiniti is not in the same segment.

This in reply to the slip n grip version of this model. Any Subaru model with a turbo or the H6 would run circles around this in snow, rain, or just plain warm dry roads.

Hyperbole much?  Someone get a G25x and an Outback H6 out on Laguna Seca on a warm, sunny day.  Sorry dude, but the Scoobie would get slaughtered.

There's a whole, whole lot more to good handling than a full-time AWD system.
