I can't imagine many cars worse than my Corvette.  That's why it's in storage for six months every year.  And it's one of the few cars whose body won't rust out too.

No kidding.  My Vette air dam, 4" off the road would have provided much joy too.

OTOH, my Acura TL Type S, with new Michelin X-Ice was quite impressive today on my first drive over ice-slicked streets.  I did a couple of braking tests and then easily followed a Buick that struggled to get across an intersection.  I want to try it in deepish snow next.

We LOVE our X-Ices.  We have them on all our cars.  Echo, IS300, Accord Coupe.

Really?  That's good to hear.  When I was shopping around I was really skeptical of the X-Ices as the tread didn't seem very "open" like my old Dunlops (great winter tires) were.  But my tire shop dude promised I'd like the X-Ice.  I took him at his word (the $70 rebate helped too) and bought them.  Today was the first real try on ice.  I'll reserve my final opinion for after the first good snowfall.  The poor sods near Sarnia aren't that far west of me.

4", tons of room.
This is what I have to work with, Hoosiers would suck in the snow as well.

Actually, in last winter's expedition to the arctic, it didn't do too badly -

As all the participants were auto writers (AFAIK), there are lots of stories out there on this trip.

Yeah, with winters t isn't too bad since the weight sits on the drive wheels.  It just can't plow through the deep stuff.

With such a short wheelbase wouldn't the Smart be apt to suddenly do a piroutte down the road?

They all have stability and traction control so I would assume that helps....otherwise....yeah, it would be the Suzuki Samari all over again

My 82 280ZX.  RWD, light weight, summer tires.  I drove it in winter once. We had a skiff of snow and I could hardly climb the incline from my friend's house to get the car home.  And I lived in the middle of the prairies, so it wasn't much of an incline.

Once I (finally) got home, parked the car in the garage and waited for spring.  My friend had a half ton that was way more stable than my car; there was simply no weight in the back end to hold it down. At least we could put a snowmobile in the back of the truck.

Some cars deserve a dry heated garage to hibernate in the winter time, but if you must drive it year round, I'm sure good winter tires will do the trick. FWDs were just invented for people too lazy to change over to winter tires.

Actually with the super thin 155/60 R15 tires up front this little guy would zing around in the snow pretty well I would think. The light weight would also be an advantage until you hit slush, which would be the Smart's worst winter enemy.

I saw this Dodge Demon out in the snow yesterday. Looks like he's at least got snow tires.

My Mazda3 Sport GT isn't the best of winter cars.  Not quite in the same league as those other cars, I know, but it doesn't have the same balance as any of my VWs (Jettas, Passats) that I've owned.  Wonder what the big difference is...I mean I've got a really good set of winter tires on it but I dunno.....   ???

My Cobalt SS was like that too....horrible, but the Alero was great (only front drivers I owned).  The gf's SX4 is awesome for a FWD
