Tire Question for the Uneducated.
« on: December 10, 2010, 11:42:00 am »
Tires on my car are P185/60R14

It's hard to find replacements for them locally.
I did find a set of P185/65R14 tires.

What's the difference?  Will the slight difference make these tires unusable for my car?

 :-[

I know, simple question, but I don't do "car stuff."

I guess the better question to ask is:
If I can't find P185/60R14 tires, what's the best/proper alternative size of tire?

I wouldn't make that change.  From the Tire Calculator: speedometer reading with the non-stock tire would be 3.2% too slow.  When your speedo reads 60 mph, you are actually travelling 61.9 mph.

Not only that, but your acceleration would be slowed.

If you're near a Canadian Tire, they have plenty to choose from in that size.

Not my local Canadian Tire.
They only have one set of tires in that size.  Hence why I'm looking for alternative choices.

The difference in diameter is 3.07%. The rule of thumb is the diameter should not vary by more than 3%. In my view .07% is insignificant.

But, you have to draw the line somewhere.  If 3.07 is okay, then why not 3.14?  And so it goes...

Why not just get the proper size? Yes, 3% difference is the rule of thumb, but why push it?

Even if they don't have any in stock, any tire shop should be able to order you a set of P185/60R14s: 1010 Tires lists 24 models (in stock) for that size.
