Sorry folks...Moms' still on the road.
« on: November 18, 2010, 06:56:51 am »
e-mail from my 85 year old Mom last night;

Hi --Thought I 'd tell you I got 100% on my drivers test today --eyesight good
according to their test--& was able to renew my license right there this
time as there is a new Vehicle branch right on the same floor.  Bldg is
around the corner from Yonge St on Bloomington .  Also got my Flu'shot
Monday morning at my Dr.'s so that is a pretty good accomplishment for
this week.         Terrible weather today though.... Hope you didn't
have any trouble driving to & from work.       Love to all---Mom

What bad Wx?

Judging from the title I'm assuming you have some concerns?  It's a tough situation to deal with especially as there is no definitive way of judging when it's time to hang up the keys. People don't suddenly go from "OK to drive" one day to "shouldn't be driving" the next but we all get to "unsafe to drive" at some point as we age. (assuming we live long enough)

She has 'trouble' with parking in the underground at her condo. Out on the road she seems OK though although she tends to left foot brake at a moments notice. ::)
She hasnl't hit anyone...yet...but been hit by others of her own vintage.

Yeah, she just got a new lap top and retired the old system!
Yes, just the written and the eye test.

What does she drive? Not a beige Corolla, I hope?

(That's what my grandmother drives since 2002 or 2003, and she loves it!  ;D)

85...she's ok, she does not drive at all in rush hour, rain, snow and/or bad Wx or at night. You would have to meet her to judge her. I'm sure her Dr. would tell her to stop if she thought she should.
I had an Aunt who drove from Mineappolis/St. Paul every Summer to stay with my Granddad and she drove this when she was in her 90's!
My Father was still flying his plane at 85. Here's a picture of him when he was 80 years young putting gas in YPA.
You have to look at these things on a case by case basis.

For sure..some old folks are still VERY sharp mentally.  They just lose some of that reaction time when they drive.  The problem with trusting the Doctor is often they don't want to take away their longtime patients mobility.  And the family is often in that Catch 22 also.

But you sound sincere in knowing she's OK to drive still.  If she wasn't OK to drive, would you press the issue for her to stop?

Agreed, it depends on the person.  I was talking to my Grandmother last night, she's 2 years older than your mom.  She's still totally with it, and drivers herself around.  She mostly sticks closer to home, if she has to go further she will usually ask either my mom or dad to take her.  She has admitted that she is considering hanging it up next year when her license expires.

OTOH, my wife's mother is 20 years younger and had her license taken away because she told her doctor she was starting to forget where she was.  (no more showing up on our doorstep unannounced...but that's another story!    ;D   )
