That time of year again! CCOTY
« on: October 21, 2010, 09:53:36 pm »
Well it is that time of year again.  AJAC journalists gather in Niagara for a week of vehicle testing to test for CCOTY.

You can see all the categories and nominees at www.ajac.ca under car of the year on the top menu.

Personally I am assigned to test small car > 21,000.  Sports and performance > 50,000 and Luxury over 50,000.   Of course I won't be missing the change to trash the SLS and R8 or Turbo S around the track in my spare time.

What are your predictions?  Some tight categories this year, none no tight then the 2 horse race in the minivan category.

Might be easier to do a poll for each of those categories...  ;)

James, I see you have the Kia Forte 5 listed. Is it even out? I don't remember seeing a single review/first take/anything on it.

No entries this year.  I could do poll.... let's see if I can combine them.  Would have to create a ton of polls, can't combine them.  Just copy / paste ;)

Kia isn't out yet but it is there to test.

What's wrong with having a seperate poll/thread for each category? It'd prevent a mishmash of discussions spanning many categories.

http://www.canadiandriver.com/2010/10/22/kia-launches-all-new-2011-forte5-door.htm

The Forte5-Door is available with an efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinder or sporty 2.4-litre four-cylinder, both featuring a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic transmission. The new six-speed transmissions will be used in all Forte models for 2011.

Woo hoo! Finally a modern transmission in a lower priced Kia! I'll start a thread about the Forte 5.

@Wing

You've got these categories wrong from the start:

SUV - CUV (under $35k)
Hyundai Tucson  (2)
Kia Sportage  (3)
Mitsubishi RVR   (1)

Mitsu can't win because it's slightly smaller than the two and has less power (although it is almost as fast to 60mph as the two when similarly equipped). Plus it competes with Hyundai/Kia the new poster child car company for the auto media.

That's just my guess, a lot of journalists like peppy and fun to drive so that may sway it to the win.

car of the year...

Never paid much attention to those simply because I would not go and buy the "car of the year" simply because it was.

Like the Oscars...someone has to win...no matter how bad the actors or films are.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!
A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!
A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Think a lot will depending on the engine, options, and therefore price of the trim submitted to compete in the categories. Weightings really seem to swing on fuel economy and price. Having not looked at the specific trims, here's what I think:

Small car under 21k
Ford Fiesta (1)
Mazda2 (3)
Scion xB
Scion xD
Volkswagen Jetta (2)

Small car > $21k
Chevrolet Cruze (1)
Honda CR-Z
Kia Forte 5 (3)
Nissan Juke  (2)
Scion tC

Family Car < $30k
Hyundai Sonata Limited (1)
Suzuki Kizashi (3)
Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel (2)

Family Car > $30k
Buick Regal (3)
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon (1)
Toyota Avalon (2)

LUXURY CAR (over $50k)
Audi A8 (3)
BMW 5 Series Sedan
Cadillac CTS Coupe
Hyundai Equus
Infiniti M (2)
Lexus IS350
Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTEC Sedan (1)
Volvo S60

PRESTIGE (over $75k)
Audi R8 Spyder (1)
BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo
Jaguar XJ Supercharged
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG  (2)
Porsche 911 Turbo S (3)

SPORTS - PERFORMANCE (over $50k)
Cadillac CTS-V Coupe  (2)
Ford Mustang Shelby (1)
Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet (3)

MINIVAN
Honda Odyssey (2)
Toyota Sienna (1)

SUV - CUV (under $35k)
Hyundai Tucson (3)
Kia Sportage (1)
Mitsubishi RVR (2)

SUV - CUV (under $50k)
Ford Edge  (1)
Honda Accord Crosstour  (3)
Hyundai Santa Fe
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Kia Sorento (2)
Toyota 4Runner
Toyota Highlander Hybrid

SUV - CUV (over $50k)
Ford Lincoln MKX
Mercedes-Benz R350 BlueTEC  (1)
Porsche Cayenne (3)
Volkswagen Touareg (2)

CCOTY finalists Chevrolet Cruze (my pick), Nissan Juke, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata.
CTOTY finalists Sportage, RVR, or Edge.

Mazda normally walks away with something, but can't see it this year.

Small Car < 21K:      Mazda 2.    The more I read about the Fiesta, the more disappointed I am
Small Car > 21K:      Juke.         My pick for surprise winner
Family < 30K:          Sonata.     Otherwise TopGun will complain   ;D
Family > 30K:          Avalon.      The ultimate fly under the radar vehicle
Luxury:                  BMW 5.      Everyone's still chasing
Prestige:                Porsche.     No contest in my mind
Sports - Perf           Mustang.    5.0, baby
Minivan                  Sienna.       Flipped a coin, sorry, you lost Odyssey
SUV < 50K              Jeep.         Newness factor
SUV > 50K              Porsche.     Of the 4, the one i'd put in my driveway.

Yeah I'd pick the Sienna over the Odyssey too, it just looks much better.

I'm also hoping the Juke takes the Small Car over 21k category. I really appreciate it when car makers go in a completely different direction than anything else. It looks different (looks great IMO) and has a wonderful powertrain. If I wasn't married with a baby (ie. I was a single guy), the Juke would be pretty high on my list.

Mazda2, Juke, Sonata, Regal, Equus, R8, Mustang, Sienna, Sportage, Sorento, R350 BlueTec are my picks.

Car of the year has to be the Sonata in my mind. It went from middle-of-the-pack to class-leading in so many aspects. Especially when you consider the full line-up of engines... I don't remember a vehicle redesign this drastic in all aspects.

Just teasing you...  ;)

One other thing interesting to me: Juke is under one of the car categories and not CUV. Yeah, I know it's more of a car than a CUV, but MT had is in their Truck of the Year contest and made the final despite having less utility than many sub-compacts. It's a quick and fun little beast despite its ugly face; check out MT for details.
