Audi's E-Tron, Crappy Name
« on: September 16, 2010, 05:34:56 am »
Someone didn't do enough research!

...Audi looks set to make the same mistake with their upcoming range of electric vehicles, branded as e-Tron. It turns out in French, the word etron is synonymous with merde in the same way that “crap” is to “s**t”.
My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

Anyone speak French? Is this actually true?

Remember the urban legend that the Chevy Nova flopped in Mexico because "No va" is Spanish for "No go"? Completely untrue... but people believed it.

Well No Va is Spanish for No Go...but the Chevy flopped because it was another POS GM, and not because of the name.... ;D

And yes, etron is crap.....more of a Euro word though I would guess.  Have never heard it used here...

I'm french speaking and that is true. An "étron" in french is crap. It's pronounced more like "Hey Tron" but I'm sure some people here would make fun of it.

They could do a Jetta / Bora name thing for different audiences.

You could say étron when the batteries run out or blown another light bulb.  ;D

I think that an "étron" refers more to the general "shape" of the matter than the actual "stuff" it's made of.  For example, a "bouse de vache" will never pass as an étron because it's not shaped like one and vice-versa... ;D

The word "étron" is often used in Québec as an insult.  It's basically a very fresh swirly load of cr*p.  :-X

Someone didn't do enough research!

They just had to type ETRON in Google Images (NSFW).  They would have seen a bunch of Audis and ... other stuff.  ;D

Nova shared the Corolla's AE82 platform, 1.6 L (98 cu in) 4-cylinder engines and was available with 5-speed manual, 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transmissions.

But you knew that.

I think the floppy Nova was the rebadged Toyota Corolla, slowest car Road&Track tested that year.

I don't really know for sure but I read somewhere on the Net - it could've been here - that 'LaCrosse' means 'teenage masturbator' in Quebec. :rofl2: If so, that's the crappy name of all time.  ;D

Too bad Buick didn't call it the 'Wanker' in the ROC. Would've been perfect in redneck country.

Yup, that is why the first gen here in Canada was the 'Allure'.  But this time around GM said F' it! We are going with Lacrosse

The Honda Fitta. The Fitta was released in Scandinavian countries by Honda, who were apparently unaware of its colloquial meaning in the area's native languages -- "fitta" is slang (in Swedish, Finnish, Danish, and Norwegian) for female genetalia. It was renamed Jazz after Honda caught on. from toalight

The Mitsubishi Pajero. "Pajero" is apparently Mexican Spanish slang for "wanker." from vuo

The Chevrolet El Camino. "El Camino" is Spanish for "The Walk." I suspect that Chevrolet chose this name because it sounded cool in 1959 (the year the first El Camino was manufactured), although they don't appear to have researched the phrase until it was too late. Who'd drive a car called "The Walk?"
