How about a much more affordable Exotic for Sale?
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:10:11 pm »
If I had the money (i.e. didn't just buy a house) I would consdier this as a fun summer toy.  Would have to learn everything about British Motoring as we all know how reliable it would be.

Odd to be at a Subaru dealership.

Probably a Maserati BiTurbo would be about the most affordable exotic ... to buy at least.

Seems in line with the US prices.  I'd be tempted by it for sure.  So if the engine blows up...could you sell it for $9,000?  Less than a couple year's depreciation of a new GTI!

Heck, I was talking to a guy that owns a 1949 Navion today...and he can still find parts for that.  If only he could stop from crashing it.   :hide:

I knew a guy who had both Esprit....first he had the one pictured, then the V8 one.  He said he thought he had spent more in fixing them than he did BUYING them.....
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Would have to learn everything about British Motoring as we all know how reliable it would be.

It only has 53,000 kms. How unreliable can it be?

I always loved the exterior styling of those. The inside; dash, etc, reminded me of a kit car though.

It is probably not too bad to fix when it breaks, always assuming you can get the parts.  The V8 version... now that would be an expensive thing to deal with.

Reminds me of someone I knew in the vintage motorcycle club. He had a nice collection of Ariel Square Fours, Sunbeams and BSAs, but to get from A to B, he chose something non-British.

They didn't call Lucas, the Prince of Darkness, for nothing.

 :iagree:

The seller of the Lotus is probably shopping for a 911, so he can get out rack up km's.  It only has 53K 'cause it spends a lot of time waiting.  Waiting for parts to arrive...

My uncle was a car/bike nut that had a fleet of neat rides, an Esprit was one of them, and it was the least used of the bunch.  His two faves were actually a stealthy big-block 4-speed Camaro and a 911-engined hot rod 60's VW Beetle.  "They never see me coming!"  One thing he hated about the Lotus was having to go 50km/h over the speed limit to change lanes, thanks to the poor visibility.

A friend had an '83 Esprit turbo, he could never catch my '83 911 at the track.  He always seemed to be messing with the carbs.  Sold it to buy a Lotus type 51, still a glutton for punishment.
Sure was purty though

Well I'd still want one. I love the styling of the Esprit (the inside is another matter). When I was a kid, I was bugging my mom to buy a Lotus Europa..as a daily driver...oh, that would have gone over well.

Seriously, can you get parts for them from Lotus or do you have to go to another party carrying the older Lotus parts?

How often was Lotus sold since Colin passed away?

Its strange when looking at exotics that you never see any of them with high kilometers, be it Lotus, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. I see plenty of high mileage Porsches, but then I don't consider one an exotic.

Not strange at all.  I haven't driven any super-exotics, but a few cars like an Esprit, Ferrari 308 and such, and none were as useful as a 911.  Also, none of them are as durable, and require much more frequent and expensive service.  So, they end up being owned by rich folks that drive around during the day in a Mercedes, BMW or Porsche and drive the Lambo only occasionally.

They can be horrible cars to actually go anywhere in.  Can you park a 911 in a parking lot?  Sure.  What about a Lambo?  Sure, but you're going to attract attention.  I could go through the Timmies drive-through in my 911, try that in a Countach or any modern Lambo.  Difficult.  At the grocery store near me, there's no way any of those super-exotics would make it over the speed bumps.  Seriously!

I knew a guy in my office building with a Ferrari that tried to drive it to work one day.  It couldn't get up and down the parkade ramp.  So, did he park it out on the street?  No, he drove home and came back in his BMW.

To me, those cars look awesome, and I'd love to take them to a track and really see how they perform, but if it was my hard-earned dough, I'd never buy one.  Honestly.  Even if I won the $50M Super-Jackpot, forget it.  I'd give most of it away and throw $5M in the bank and live very well on the income, and that would not include some $400K automobile.  What a waste of money, I think.  But, people can do what they wish.  I just wouldn't buy one.

What would I buy if I were rich?  I might splurge for a Corvette ZR-1, but a Cayman S would be a pretty sweet treat.  A real car that I could drive and enjoy and have a lot of fun with.

No, no... he still has his common sense... well some of it anyway.  He hasn't sold the Porsche yet (good thing... I keep thinking I'm going to be able to harvest my money tree and buy it from him).  Anyway, he absolutely loves his Esprit V8 -- he's sending it in for some mods over the winter to get it up around 450hp.
