The "brick" key that has to be inserted into a slot, then pressing the start button sequence, as well as the motor that gives you your key back is a Volvo feature. I don't know how the Land Rover one looks like, but the Volvo one is fairly simple, but completely unnecessary - as the writer wrote, a two step procedure.
Given that Volvo and Land Rover were related, I would not be surprised if they are similar.
It makes sense for keyless-drive, but otherwise not.
