I guess I'm the only one who has zero problems using the game controller for movies.  Other than "play" there is only one other button I need to know during the actual watching of the movie

"Daddy .. pause the movie .. I gotta go pee"...

As for games ... meh.  I too bought the machine to play discs.  We have Little Big Planet and Uncharted.  I've told the kids that if they want more .. spend their own money.

That said - I can keep myself and the kids entertained with the bazillion downloadable free demos.  With my short attention span  .. those demos are good enough for me.

And you are lucky with the quieter newer machines.  I bought mine used from about 2 generations ago.  The fan is so loud . .I ended up putting it in the furnace room next door to the famiiy room .. and drilled a whole in the wall to run the cables.  Without that, I would have tossed the machine in the garbage.  So for me . .thank god for the Blu-Ray remote that works through walls (unlike IR).

I don't think the new box has IR, are there any bluetooth remotes out there?

I've never seen one but that doesn't mean there isn't. Besides, I think the PS3 is the only device that uses BT for the remote. I never understood why companies never adopted BT for remotes as its works better than IR.

Here is Harmony's answer.

EDIT:

Dell has this Harmony remote on sale today if you needed one.

If you don't play many games the remote is awesome because the battery lasts a long time.  Otherwise you have to constantly charge the controllers!

Hey Bob, congratz.

A very good family game is the "Rockband" family.  My daughters 8 and 11 love it, and actually all 4 of us can play.  Go find a used set, lots online at kijiji et al for around $80.00

I myself am hooked on the Call of Duty franchise, but it's a FPS.....  Rather arcadey though.  Nov 9 Black Ops comes out.

Good choice on the 3 btw, If and when 3d ever takes off, you already have a 3d capable player.  Sony is going to push that tech hard in the next couple years.

If and when 3d ever takes off, you already have a 3d capable player.  Sony is going to push that tech hard in the next couple years.

Patch is coming next month....

Sony has confirmed that it will update the PS3's firmware to support 3D Blu-ray movies in October - a month later than originally promised.

Sony boss man Howard Stringer made the announcement on stage at Sony's IFA 2010 press conference, which concluded moments ago.

The firmware update will enable PS3 to play new 3D Blu-ray movies which, in case it's not immediately obvious to you, contain 3D versions of movies to be watched on a compatible 3D TV.

Stringer didn't offer a reason for the delay, but even by October there's almost nothing available on 3D Blu-ray, anyway.

Michael Jackson's This Is It, and Alice in Wonderland are set to appear on the new 3D discs. Stringer also confirmed that Avatar, Spider-man 3 and Green Hornet are all due to arrive on 3D Blu-ray at a later date.

So unless you're a huge fan of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, there's no real rush anyway.

Of course you still need 3D software and a 3DTV plus if you go through your reciever/pre-pro that will also need to be 3D compatible. Oh ya, don't forget to buy enough 3D glasses for everybody.

I played a 3D game the other day in futureshop, that was pretty good. Not mind blowing but good. I assume that will be the future of gaming.

A little more about GT5.  This game alone is almost enough to make me spring for a PS3

You have no idea what you're missing.  The PS3 is such an awesome piece of kit.  The Blu-Ray alone is awesome.  Surf the web on your TV.  Use it for music, pictures, videos.

Even if you never play games, the PS3 is worth having.

What is the difference between the two besides 40GB in HDD space?

No, I decided I would go with the big lights instead, get them on Wednesday!  The new Paul Buff battery pack isn't released until November though so only indoor shoots until then. Can't wait!!
