PS3 FTW!!
« on: September 03, 2010, 03:30:54 pm »
I recently sold some camera equipment (2 strobes and a lens) to fund some replacements.  But I just can't decide what to get!

I have around $1,500 so can either get:

Big lights, i.e. professional strobes.  I need these for the car shoots that I have planned, plus any other lit photography.  But the kids and yard work are taking up a lot of my time at the moment, so I'm not sure I can justify $1,500 on something I might use two or three times before Winter.

A new PC.  Again, something I need for photography. My old laptop is past it's best, and the screen is crap for editing anyway, I use a separate monitor. So something from Dell with 8gb ram and an i7 processor would do nicely!

Or just stuff that lot and get a PS3.  I need a blu-ray player desperately and the games would be nice too.

I just can't decide...  I suppose I'm having a hard time defending spending that much on photography equipment when I haven't got many shoots planned soon.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

How about a cheaper PC and a PS3?!  ;D

+1

Or if you need only a BD player, they can be had for under $150 easily now, but won't play games.

$1500 also buys a nice set of sticky tires for the car and some track time :)

You can always rent big strobes when needed.  How about building your own PC with a blu-ray player/burner.  It's easy enough and less than $1500.

Track day would be a waste, summer wheels are already in the bag, and I can't reduce the spec on the pc as it has to be a good future proof one. I suppose I could rent the lights, I'm sure that would add up over time though, plus easier in TO than round here.

The PS3 would get used a lot more for movies than for games, don't have the time to play games really.

And the pc and tv are in different rooms so I won't be watching blu ray on the pc. Do dell do a holiday sale, should I wait until christmas?

For a PC, I recommend getting a top business line one.  They're not much more than the consumer line ones, they are much better quality than the ones at FutureShop, they don't come with bloatware, and they come with a 3-year warranty.

I've had great experience with them (have had them for years).  Even when I got a lemon-ish one.  I used their 2-3 day pick-up, repair and re-deliver (as part of the warranty) twice during the warranty period.  Didn't pay a cent for the expedited shipping back and forth.  And no, I don't have a business.

P.S. Was looking at one for a friend the other day.  14 inch laptop.  Top-line HP business line and recommended model by multiple mags.  A little over $1100.

Have they got a core i5 or i7 iMac out?
Here's my advice

-Buy PS3 online on boxing day - cheap and no lineups
-Buy a computer - there are $700 and $900 builds that will meet your needs (excluding monitor)
-Rent occasional use photog gear or DIY build if possible
-buy chip for the blue monster

All good suggestions, chip is on the cards at some point, not sure if just before Winter is the right time though.  I can't DIY big lights, and I don't think there is a rental place round here.  If I do get a PS3 I would like it before GT5 comes out.

And on the PC, I can't find one to my spec that I know is reliable. Are there review sites out there that test and review independent manufacturers?  I tried the Dell business ones but they don't seem any different in price, if anything they seem more expensive.

The mac doesn't do anything a pc can't do, for less cost.  Nothing about apple computers is unique any more, apart from the design, which I don't care about.

Spend money on the family and you, PS3.
I consider the Sony PS3 one of the great techno greats, right up there with BB's, ATM's and debit cards.

If you go the PS3 / GT5 route, make sure you get a decent wheel. The vanilla PS3 controller is awful for driving games.

However the XBOX / Forza 3 route is okay without the wheel.

As for new PC....well sure. But I don't see you as the PC gamer type so there's little fun factor in that. If I've read you wrong then gogogo Starcraft 2!
