There are more than a few of us who are Toyota owners.  Despite the recent ruckus... they make generally decent if not typically inspired cars. Not everyone is an enthusiast and even a few of us do like our Toyota's for what may be considered non-enthusiast reasons.

Correct.

What is an "enthusiast"  ???   10% of Canadian new car buyers are "enthusiasts".   PPl who just LOVE the car.  But what do they love about it?  High speed cornering, zero to 60 mph?  Hardly. Those buyers probably make less than .1%.  Just look at what sells and do the math.  The remainder buy for a whole variety of reasons, primarily price and financing rates.

All this talk about how the Avalon is not an "enthusiasts" car is gibberish.  "Enthusiasts" as being termed in this thread, don't buy this particular car.  Would you describe a former Marquis owner as an "enthusiast"?  Look as to how many of those units sold!  Enough Americans still like big roomy interstate sedans and this is one of them.

It's just that simple.  :)

What is an "enthusiast"   ???

Is someone who buys $100gs car and drives 5000km a year
Or someone in $20gs car and get to drive it 40000km, and will just go for a drive because they want to be on the road  ???

Well, let's talk cars manufactured in the last decade.  Toyota is MIA on this count - Honda has had it's SI's S2000, Mazda/speeds, Nissan the SE-Rs, even the Cobalt SS are all enthusiast focused cars.

The Corolla XRS?  Meh.

Oh, I completely agree.  Toyota hasn't made anything that has excited me in a VERY long time.  Having said that, my comment wasn't based solely on the last decade either. :)

The 2ZZ-GE in the 00-05 Celica/03-06 Matrix XRS/05-06 Corolla XRS is probably the last great engine Toyota's ever made. The new Corolla/Matrix XRS is definitely a meh.

I dunno about that.  The engine in my IS350 (2GR-FSE) has been on Top 10 lists since it came out, and is quite the engine IMO.

I completely agree.  I wish Toyota would put this in something sporty at a lower price point.  Definitely one of the better V6 mills out there.

Anybody can put a big backseat in a car when they sacrafice trunkspace like the Avalon does.

Sorry - I missed your explanation for why the Lacrosse is fractionally larger outside, smaller inside and offers a smaller trunk than the Avalon.  What were they sacrificing, exactly?  It sure wasn't weight.

Jaeger

I can see why the GM slappies are pretty upset at the Avalon, it's going to eat a lot of the buick regal sales.  GM missed it's target consumer by making the regal and lacrosse porky, stiff rides, slow four cylinder engines, flat seating, and cramped rear seats. The Avalon will appeal to the Grampy consumer, who wants a large, quiet and floaty ride.

Agreed, but it was off my radar because I can't afford it. :) I'd even take a 4GR-FSE, mainly because only the IS250 RWD comes with manaul.

You sound like Jaeger, trying to provoke a response to a ridiculous statement relating to his Regal obsession. But you're a guest... or are you?

Regardless, you're being equally absurd. The Avalon competes, if that is the right word for a model that sells a handful of cars a year to retired dentists and accountants in Vancouver, with the Lucerne, not the Regal. And the Lucy outsells it handily.

As for the rear seats in either Buick, I suggest you go park your ass in one before calling it cramped. Just don't injure your brain any further by accidentally sitting on a seat belt buckle.

Yeah, but your post-Supra perception of sufficiency of horsepower might me a touch skewed.  ;)  That said, I've driven the IS250 RWD with the manual transmission and found it kind of underwhelming.

And the Lucy outsells it handily.

Back to the cars at hand, If I had to choose a grandpa car, I'd probably take the LaCrosse over the Avalon on exterior style alone.  Buick does the grandpa thing really well.  "Lucy" - that's a perfect name for a big softy of a car - they should pay Catgirl a marketing commission.  :rofl:

Consumer's Reports
October 2010 edition
(ridiculous write up too?)
On the Regal and Lacrosse;
The four cylinder engines provide adequate performance, in the lacrosse the engine has to work hard, especially when merging onto a highway or maintaining speed on hills.
Steering feels overly heavy at low speeds and when parking.
The rear seat is cramped with limited head room in the regal
Neither cars's front seats measure up, The cloth seats in the Lacrossse are squishy, with uneven support.
The Regal's are hard.  The bottom cushions on both cars are too short.
A wide center console and door panels impinged on leg room.
Driver's visilibility is limited, it is obstructed by thick front roof pillars creating huge blind zones.
In both cars, a high rear deck combined with large rear head restraints and small rear window, limit the view rearward.
The lacrosse center stack is a sea of buttons.

The regal was outscored by;
Acura TSX
Lexus HS 250 hybrid
Volkswagen CC
Suzuki Kizashi (seriously?)

The lacrosse brain (see above) was easily handed, an ended at the bottom of the list...outscored by;
Hyundai Genesis
Honda Accord V6
Subaru Legacy
Toyota Camry V6
Toyota Avalon
VW Passat ACcura TL
Tocoty Camry 4 cyl
Nissa Maxima
Subaru Legacy
Hyndai Azera
honda Accord 4 cyl
Ford Taurus

"But the question surrounding the Regal is this:  How many people looking for a sports sedan will consider a Buick?"

The Avalon is more Buick than a Buick.
