Used Vehicle Review: Lexus GX, 2004-2009
« on: August 05, 2010, 04:06:23 am »

Based on the Toyota 4Runner, the Lexus GX 470 has had issues with a clunky driveshaft, leaky radiator, and burnt out turn signal bulbs, but is still rated above average by Consumer Reports, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.

FYI on these 2UZ-FE engines you got to watch out for timing belt replacement and do the water pump and tensioner while at it... since everything is out anyway. These are not chain driven valve-trains...

This is based on the previous Landcruiser 120 Series, not the 4Runner.

"The quality of some of the interior materials is suspect, as cracks in the dashboard panels appear to be common."

I looked at these extensively when I was shopping for a used trucky mid-sized SUV. The tailgate design is nearly useless and the third row seats are a joke (on the floor and flip to the side when not in use.) Ride was good, a little jittery but that is to be expected. Power was so-so. The interior was not well laid out but materials seemed good. The high resale prices is what killed it for me.

I ended up with the LR3 for about $10k less than what an equal year/mileage GX was going to run. Outside of the reported reliability issues the Rover is superior in every way (ergonomics, interior room (simply brilliant 7 seater that real adults can use!, sound system, on road ride and off road performance.)

I can't believe Toyota left the swinging tailgate on the new GX.

This is based on the previous Landcruiser 120 Series, not the 4Runner.

All three trucks are related.

OT: Scaerio, you're posted in Belgrade right now? That was my F-i-L's first posting when he joined the foreign service. My wife has fond memories of the city; they left, literally, right before the war.

Cool.  Belgrade is not the same city, that's for sure.  I would be interested to know who your F-i-L is.  Send me a PM.  I was posted to Sarajevo last year.  We had a 2007 Landcruiser in our "fleet" there -  fantastic vehicle.

A Landcruiser 120 or the bigger one? (ala Lexus LX 470?)

No, the 120 - same body as the GX470, but ours was a turbo diesel.

You need not really concern yourself with the T belt on this engine as it is a non interference design.  Belt, rollers and water pump will last 250k km easy.

Don't think that chain driven cam motors are without agony.  Chain stretch, sprocket wear and tensioner failure can and do happen to many motors from almost all makers.

Chris, excellent review. I love how you went in-depth and found solutions to the problems. I think the GX will be a lot more reliable than the Land Rover, but I will probably be going with 4Runner for now.

Is this pretty good for a bot.
