Ovr50, couldn't agree with your second comment more. I was going to answer your first post by saying that a true enthusiast would appreciate a BMW 2002 more so than an awesome track beast...obviously you were there...

My point is that an "enthusiast" gets joy out of driving, period. I've had fun driving a lot of cars. The two best handling cars I've ever driven were a Lotus Elise and, believe it or not, an 86 Honda Prelude Si (not that odd in a sense, Car and Driver called it one of the top handling cars in the world when it did a comprehensive test long, long ago...it came in behind a Porsche 944). I've driven a fair assortment in between, but those stand out. And a large part of why I enjoyed them was that it was a treat to go get groceries. My next car is going to be a Mini for that reason. I just got rid of a WRX because I couldn't truly enjoy it often enough to make up for the daily irritants (turbo lag, crappy interior, crappy sound system, odd bulge in drivers seat...)

Many, many cars can generate awesome numbers, far fewer make you feel good just pootling down the road.

If an M3 does that for you, enjoy. If you had a Bimmer in '71 you obviously appreciate the basics. Most BMW drivers today I couldn't say the same about.

opg210 - there is much truth in what you say. For me, I truly get a "kick" driving my M3 to/from work everyday. For me, it is a fun car; but admittedly I live in Kelowna, which has a fair degree of open driving roads. Not sure I would always have the same feeling driving daily in Vancouver or Toronto, or even Calgary for that matter.

It is not a daily driver in the sense of getting groceries or running to the recylcing depot. We use the utilitarian Highlander for such chores.

Thanks for your opinion.  :)

To the Canadian Driver tester.

I witnessed you coming out off of Solandt Drive (westbound) onto March Rd northbound yesterday and if I'd had the chance to take down the licence plate I would have called the police based on the way you were driving the car.

With a closed course environment available so close to Ottawa (Calabogie track), you should keep the racing confined to an environment where you aren't putting innocent people at risk.

Hmmm, doesn't help the unfair stereotypical profile of "some" BMW drivers now does it.  Ouch for sure!

I always love people that write such a great post like this.

So you have no idea what the license plate is but you know for a fact it was this person?

Then you just happen to know where this blog is posted and decide to come here and write your lovely little message. Time to get a life.

So. You recognized the driver? You are quite sure that the exact BMW you saw was the one being tested?   Does Canadian Driver put a sticker on the car being tested?

I believe Mr. Campbell saw me driving 80km/h on an 80km/h road and wishes he was driving a BMW 335is.  For those that know me, know that I never drive recklessly and in fact rarely even exceed the speed limit.  I have invited Mr. Campbell to call me to discuss further.  I'm not sure what Mr. Campbell considers wreckless, but apparently driving straight changing lanes once and then turning left is reckless....

Great car, and very interesting posts so far. So the 335Is would be a slightly de-tuned and more VALUED version of the M3?

If finance$$ allows, this would be a great fair weather daily driver. Would not drive it to the grocery store / mall tho, can never ever find a safe parking spot in those place, hence have a 4 door auto sedan with a large trunk for that duty.

Never driven the 2002, but do love the E30s, driven over 350,000 Km in 2 E30s. There is just something about good basic pure driving environments that is so enjoyable.

The cars themselves have improved, but now they carry a connotation that is unfortunate, but not totally undeserved.

I was hesitant to buy a BMW actually, because of the connotation of 'snobbism' that it carries. I wanted low-key.

Unfortunately, that meant staying away from a very fun driving machine.  So I didn't let that stop me in the end.

So the 335Is would be a slightly de-tuned and more VALUED version of the M3?

In my opinion, no.  Albeit that is based on reading reviews.  The 335i and 335is have a different purpose than a M3.  The M3, with its spectacular naturally aspirated V8 engine, would be an amazing track car than can be used and enjoyed as a daily driver.  The 335i and 335is, with their twin-turbos with great low end torque but which fall off at higher RPMs, won't be as good on the track but are great daily drivers.

The 335is is a tuned 335i - but factory tuned.  Personally, I'd rather get a Dinan tune (warrantied) for 2K that raises both my HP and tq numbers to over 400.   :)

But at one point, more hp and more tq don't give you more pleasure.  I heard for example that the M3 actually feels 'lighter' than the 335i, despite the fact that it's heavier, because of its superior handling.

Only a bit.  I ran the numbers through the calculator and based on the curb weight+160lbs driver, I get 340HP at the flywheel. (BMW is quoting 320HP)

20-30 would seem typical of BMW...
