I don't see what's so wrong with saying "For $60k I sure wouldn't buy this thing."  Discussion of perceived value for money forms an element of most review threads.  Suggesting that only those who could afford to purchase one have a right to comment on it is elitist snobbery of the first order.

Oh, and for $60k I sure wouldn't buy this thing.

  cheers to that. It's all up for comments  - any auto enthusiast likes to comment on a new Ferrari, Lamborghini, S-class, etc...doesn't matter if they can't go out and buy one or not.

This past weekend I drove up to Calabogie via rural side roads and then Highway 511 on my way back into Ottawa. It all makes much more sense to me now.  ;D

511 is one of my favourite stretches of road anywhere.  Sure it's fun in my P5 but I can't imagine how much better it would be in a 1 series.

The 511 and the 508 are even more fun on 2 wheels! ;D

regardless of price, this car promotes discussion.  Good  job BMW, now make the 1 series a family, you have a 2 door coupe, also bring the 3dr and 5dr hatchs, and what the heck make a 4 dr sedan, size of the old E30. I have a used E39, paid more money for it, but 4 years later I am still giddy about the car, cause the handling, drive, smoothness of the I6, manual shift, heck the experience is fantastic, its the best part of my day.  If you can afford it, get one, but if you have not had a bimmer in ur life, you have no idea what your talking about.  Just my $0.02.

So who said "Suggesting that only those who could afford to purchase one have a right to comment..."? No one said that, but some of us said why so much hate for the car, if you don't like it or think it overpriced, fine, but no need to badmouth it. Elitist snobbery? Where?  ???

I can't afford a Ferrari or a Bugatti either, but I don't go around badmouthing the cars because of that. "Value" is in the eye of the beholder.

See exhibits A and B below:

What is with all the hate for $50-60G sport cars? If you can't afford one, too bad but don't dislike it because of that.

There is also the 128 for those who think the 135 is too much money. If you still think the 128 cost too much, this is not the car for you, move along, nothing to see here.

:iagree: Exactly, well said. The sense of entitlement is baffling.

Imagine that - those who can't afford to purchase the car feeling entitled to comment.  I mean, really.  Who lets the riff-raff in anyway? ::)

Hey Over50 - I didn't see you jumping in to ask the dude quoted above why he thinks that those who don't like the car or think it is overpriced are simply "hating" it because they can't afford it?

I think you are being overly sensitive. But I do think that some ppl badmouth a car simply because they are envious. If you disagree, your choice. Isn't the internet a wonderful thing..... ;)

Sure.  Just like some elitist snobs attack those who dare to criticize their beloved brands by claiming that the criticism is envy-driven.  If you disagree, your choice.  ;)

I have a friend with a Mercedes SL, and the best configuration on a hot day is top down, windows up, AC blasting.  The combo of fresh air and cooled air makes things "just right."  Also, at 160km/h (!) we could carry on a conversation, even with the top down.

Personally, a shockingly new 911 Cab can be found for the same dough.  It's already suffered a massive depreciation hit, and well, it's a 911.

WHAT??  Can you point in the direction of a new 911 Cab for 60 grand??

I have been called far worse things than an elitist snob by better ppl than you. At least I have not resorted to name-calling.

Whatever. Bye.

I didn't call you an elitist snob any more than you called my criticism of the car envy-based.  Do try to read more carefully.

He said "shockingly new" not brand new. :)

Here's a 2008 with 33000miles on it, with a "Buy it Now" price of $62K.

And a 2006 Cabriolet for $56K with similar mileage.

My search of 911s between $55000 and $65000 had 23 cars from 2006 and newer.

Okay, I see.  Those are US cars.  Was looking at Porsche pre-owned via porsche.ca - and many have the long Porsche CPO warranty - so they were more expensive.

I agree with the point though.  At 60K, you start having some real nice choices.

... and one of those choices would be, at least for me, the new 1 M Coupe.

First official info released just released (posted thread in New and Upcoming Cars: http://www.canadiandriver.com/forum/index.php/topic,67513.0.html).  I'd rather that than the cab.

Are you kidding me?  Don't be silly.  For that kind of bread, a used M3 V8, Audi RS4 or an IS-F would be high on the list.  And the 1 Series is still fugly even with an "M" on the fenders..

True.  Paying good money for ugly is never a smart move.  BMW offers many compelling choices, but I don't see the 1-series as being one of them.  It's fast.  It's tiny.  It's ugly.  And it's really overpriced at 60k.
