Test Drive: 2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5
« on: July 06, 2010, 04:06:19 am »

Though the restyled, fifth generation 2010 4Runner no longer offers a V8 engine, its more powerful V6 has more horsepower and the same towing capacity, reports Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.  However, its off-road attributes create some on-road compromises, he notes.

Kudos for the (manual) 4wd mechanical transfer case shifter.  Experienced off-roaders know the push button type 4wd selectors fail when you really need them.

If one wanted a simple, capable off-road SUV, I think a Nissan XTerra would be a better value with the off-road edition coming in at $36K with a 2-speed transfer case and locking rear diff.

It looks too much like a Toyota...My guess? About 2-5 percent of buyers will ever really use this off-road...Do you still sit on the floor, as in all the older models? Or have they decided to make it a real truck, and sit up like a man while you drive...
Give me that Nissan...Looks better...cheaper...and you sit properly in it..

I agree with that totally.  The Nissan looks better, is cheaper, and has as good if not better rep (since it came out) as an off-roader.  The 4 runner used to look good but starting with the last gen. they went all angular and too weird for me.  The X-terra is the new Jeep Cherokee.  Cheap, basic but tough and good looking 4 wheeler.

This truck shares much of its platform and mechanicals with the smaller FJ Cruiser.

Hopefully they have addressed the tearing & bulging issues that the FJ folks have.

IIRC the FJs had some issues with the body cracking in the engine bay as well (maybe is the same issue?). Some "graphical" pictures have been posted on one of the FJ forums. Toyota showed owners the finger and told them they jumped their cars. Aren't these cars supposed to be strong and tough off-roaders?
Most likely few of the few 4Runners sold will see any serious off-roading anyway. Just like the H3s, Jeeps, etc. so they should be safe.

I think the 4Runner competes more with the Pathfinder than the XTerra hence the price differential.  The FJ was the package to compete vs the XTerra but Toyo went in a less conservative direction than Nissan so the comparison is not as apparent in head to head.

The 4Runner has decent base pricing but the extra packages are really over-priced.  Too bad.

Holy smokes these things are expensive these days.  I can't say I care for the newer Toyotas much, this one included.  I would take my '91 4R with the 22R-E or a Hilux over it any day of the week.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
