« on: April 29, 2010, 04:06:33 am »

The seven-seat Jeep Commander could be had with three available engines and three four-wheel drive systems, but all model years have had well-documented reliability issues, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.  Read more to find out what they were.

Good to see Chrysler is consistent and sticks with their traditional quality standards. ;) The reviewer could easily have been describing my V8 GC from '98.  ::) ::) ::)
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

A neighbor really likes off-beat cars. He has a pristine summer-only Saab convertible.

He bought a new Jeep Commander last Fall. After a couple of Jeep Cherokees he thought he could live with any shortcomings that might pop up. The Commander beat the hell out of him. It gave him so much trouble he sold it right after the last winter snowflake hit the ground. Doubtful he will buy another Chrysler product - ever!

He was looking at a Toyota Sequoia, until yesterday's recall.

Interesting read. The stalling attributed to the faulty transmission fluid filter (line filter, not the sump filter) was interesting. This is exactly what happened to my Dakota after I installed genuine Mopar replacement filter in 2007. >:( Transmission shop replaced with cheap aftermarket and voila! :)

Used prices are way too high in that guide. My 2006 LR3 was almost the same price, although it has issues of it's own... ;D

Probably the safest bet is to buy a 2006 model.  If the reliability is that pooer, than a '06 model will have had most, if not all, of the problems come up and have been repaired...it's probably bullet-proof now.

The description "Bullet-proof" should never be used in any context when the subject involves a Chrysler product. :nono:

If I had to have one of these I would go for earlier model. Why? I have a belief (hunch?) that Chrysler quality became worse as the decade went along. I think there was a lot of cost cutting and supplier squeezing as things got nasty. IMHO*

You may in fact be right. My folks drove a '97 Concorde trouble-free up to 350,000 Kms, and had it not met the side door frame of an F-150, it would probably still be going strong. Then, two years ago at the NAIAS in Toronto, I sat in a 2008 Sebring in which the entire dash assembly was coming loose on the passenger side. No doubt show cars go through a lot of abuse, but the other thousand cars there seemed to be OK.

Jeep is an awesome brand, I don't see why they needed this vehicle. The GC is big enough, if Chrysler wanted something bigger they should have used a more efficient diesel engine, but Jeep has had a bad history with those too.

I 'm not sure that Jeep really needed this oversized GC too. The marketing gurus desided they wanted to compete with the 3rd row Tahoe/Surburban and the like. Hope it was worth the $$$$'s.     ;)

You can thank Mercedes for that. They were hoping to make Jeep their cash cow and instigated the so silly Cumpas and almost as silly Patriot and Commander. Mercedes bailing out on Chrysler was the best thing that could happen to Jeep, although the new Grand Cherokee is already an orphan. Benz platform and technology without the diesel engine after Benz pulled out the carpet from under "Jeep's feet"...

Quality problems aside, this vehicle arrived about 10 to 15 years too late.  And I agree with the thought that somewhat older Chrysler products are better.  They weren't necessarily reliable, but they were at least durable.

I'd love to find a '70 or '71 Chrysler or Monaco, coupe or convert, with the 383 or 440. Those were unique (albeit massive) cars.
