Is anyone with a new Elantra getting even remotely close to the rated figures?

The onboard calculator says I'm averaging 7.8L/100km, but I only have 130km of city driving on the vehicle.  Official city rating is 6.8L/100km for the manual transmission.

Considering my best highway run got me 30.6 mpg, I ain't that impressed by any of them.

Drove it as if it was an Elantra or Cruze! :)

Edmunds results for their long-term Cruze and Sonata (no Elantra yet):

Identical averages @25.2 (CR rates them at 26 and 27 combined, respectively)

Best highway mileage Cruze: 32.1, Sonata 33.9.

Those are some surprising results, to say the least.

Apparently, the Cruze Eco is the one to be had for fuel economy. I hope CR tests it. The other Cruzes are rather mediocre in that regard.

I would like to know who Hyundai is paying off at the EPA or at NRC.  The automatic Elantra is rated at 41/58 mpg in Canada and, I believe, 29/40 mpg (smaller gallon) in the U.S.  In the most recent C&D comparo of small sedans, the mileage on the Elantra was 20 mpg (about 24 mpg in Canada).  Now granted, the C&D mileage likely includes all their 0-60 etc. testing, but also included quite a bit of highway driving.  In fact, this mileage was midpack among the other vehicles (Ford Focus, Chevy Cruze, Mazda 3s, Volkswagen Jetta) and was soundly beaten the the Focus.  Even the Autos.ca recent test only got 36 mpg, all on the highway.  We used to have a 2003 Honda Accord V6 that could get 36 mpg on the highway travelling at 10 over the limit generally.

Is anyone with a new Elantra getting even remotely close to the rated figures?
In real world tests that I have seen (CR, Motortrend) the Elantra has been middle of the pack. SO I would agree that the government numbers should be re-evaluated,.

Sounds like Hyundai have the EPA a ringer for their testing :)

Cruze tested similarly, 17/36 for CR, 24/36 EPA. Down 19% for the city rating vs 21% for the Elantra. Might have been identical before CR rounded things to even numbers.

Interesting thing is the Sonata tested 18/39 for CR, 22/35 EPA

The city number is down 18%, again similar to the Cruze and the Elantra, but the highway test is up 11%.

Weight of all three:

Elantra, 2770 lbs
Cruze, 3130/3140 lbs
Sonata 3210 lbs

IIRC the CR test loop is on public roads, so it is subject to varying conditions. Interesting numbers, but, like C&D, not ones I'd take to the bank.
I beleive the CR tests are done on their test track. They simulate city and highway conditions. It is in the desert so conditions are quite constant.

You left out the 5000 lb trailer they make all North American cars tow during the test. :rofl2:

I've got my 2011 GLS auto less than a week ago. So far loving this car a lot. I needed a commuter and did not expect to actually like it that much. It feels speedy, brakes are great and with a ton of interior features it keeps me entertained on my way to work. The audio is a bit plain for my taste, but it'll do. I check satellite radio now and then surfing the channels. I am finally done with burning CDs - I keep a 4 gig USB stick loaded. The seats are super comfortable for me (might be not as comfortable for a not so skinny guy though). I love the lights of the panel. BT is nice and easy too. The only thing I'm still trying to get used to is the visibility. In this car I can't tell where the front end actually ends, so its a bit of a guess work at this point. Had to put some marks on the wall in my garage to know when to stop.  ;D Overall, I'm impressed with a load of features in a vehicle which is so moderately priced. And it is actually fun to drive. When I was buying it, I test drove Sonata too, but did not feel I will need it as a commuter car. I was also thinking about the economy of this car (Elantra), but now that I find it fun to drive, my priorities shifted a bit  ;D I still have less than 300 kms on it and it is 100% city rush hour driving. My average goes down every day and is currently at 9.9 kms/l. I'll post some pics if someone is interested after this weekend.

I echo the comment about pictures... lots of pictures!!

I keep seeing new Elantra's around and man do they look good. The styling makes it stand out and I imagine that can be a good and a bad thing but to my eye it looks incredibly sleek from nearly any angle.
