update - Elantra Coupe confirmed for fourth quarter of 2011

Hyundai has now made it official that it will build a coupe version of its new Elantra compact car later this year. Previous reports suggested that this model would be hitting showroom floors as soon as April, but we can now confirm that Hyundai will be rolling out the Elantra Coupe later this fall or early winter before the year's end. We expect the new bodystyle to be unveiled at either the New York or Los Angeles auto show.

I wouldn't buy a car if I didn't know when it was going to be delivered.

I don't see anything unusual about this. Early adapters usually have to go through inconveniences to be 'the first on the block' to own one, especially if its popular and/or production is having a tough time keeping up (well documented in the news). And we don't know how their assembly is set up, they may have produced Canadian cars for dealer orders and now they are going full steam producing cars for Americans. 17 days doesn't sound like much for a new launched car.

Of course there is the option not to buy at all, obviously. Its always there.

The timeline doesn't matter, but there should still be a specific date.  Otherwise they could keep you hanging on for ages.  Maybe it's just me but if they couldn't guarantee me a date in writing I'd walk away.

Looks like a spoiler is now an option on Hyundai Canada's website (their price of $454.95 is absurd), but I haven't found any images of it yet.

I wouldn't prolly spend $450+ tax on it, but FWIW it's a sharp looking trunk "handle" and it even comes with a stoplight  :)

$450 is "absurd" for an OE spoiler with integrated brake light?  Since when?  I can remember spending a good deal more than that for OE spoilers from Honda and Nissan in years past.

There will be painted spoiler on E-bay within 3 months for less than half that price...

Check that...there's an assortment now on E-bay for as low as $115.

And such is always the case comparing aftermarket with OE, no?  $450 struck me as bordering on cheap for an OE piece.  I recall Honda and Nissan OE spoilers in the $600 - 700 range on past cars.  Maybe they have come down a good deal since then - my current car has no spoiler and the one before that had it integrated as part of a sport package - but I'd be surprised if you could get one for much less than Hyundai's asking price from any other mainstream manufacturer.  And if something went amiss with my new spoiler, I'd prefer to take it up with my dealer rather than some anynomous E-bay dude selling car parts from his mother's basement.  :)  Just sayin'.....

Here is another view, they are a little pricey but are the exact color match and bolt on properly.

I've bought spoilers that were PERFECT fit and color match from E-bay.  Made from quality FRP or carbon fiber too.  Some are made in Taiwan, some Korea.  But quality is top notch.  Also...it won't be long before the actual OEM spoilers will be for sale on E-bay directly from Korea....for half price.

OK, I admit I don't have a basis to compare it against, but considering the prices of some of their other options I figured it would be similarly out of line.
Anyway, for a compact car, does a spoiler serve any functional purpose?  And what impact, if any, would it have on fuel economy?
