I guess if you like to the looks of the Sonata, you will like this too. Overstyled again, in my opinion. Just too bloody much going on. I'm thinking I am more a Kia guy when it comes to Korean car styling. Find their product to be very sharp.

I agree, both cars are overstyled.  However, the Elantra borders on acceptable while the Sonata is way out there.  Might still not keep me from getting one though :)

Thankfully for Hyundai, a lot of buyers seem to like the look of the Sonata - they are doing quite well with it.  I expect they will do very well with Elantra as well.

I'm of the Kia styling camp also, but have to say the Sonata looks much better to me in the flesh than in photos.

Either way, that's the way to 'badge engineer', make the styling radically different to appeal to different groups of buyers.

Agreed. The rear door greenhouse is very reminiscent of the Dodge Avenger, and we all know how well that turned out. There are more bends and creases in that sheetmetal than you'd find in an entire auto body shop.

The dash design is very similar to a lot of other cars. Not bad, just very derivative, as Hyundai tends to do.

All in all it is an OK effort, but from a design POV not anything for any of the leading competition to lose sleep about.

The fourth car will be the 2011 Elantra, which has been dramatically upgraded and will be revealed next week at the Los Angeles auto show. The Elantra will be rated at 40 mpg on the highway, 29 mpg in the city. Full details will arrive at the show.

No, I said leading competition. I was referring to Focus, Cruze, and Mazda 3. Both of the models you referenced are lagging in everything except sales, but the market will eventually correct itself.

"The Elantra is a touch lighter than its predecessor and tips the scales at 2,661 lbs with a manual and 2,701 lbs with an automatic. Weight is also reduced thanks to the use of an aluminum engine block, which replaces cast iron. It's 37-percent stiffer thanks to the use of high-strength steel and has better aerodynamics. Road noise is quieted with more sound-proof plastic shields and foam padding."

Wow, two thumbs up for Hyundai.

It's stiffer, quieter and lighter - impressive.

If those numbers are accurate for the North American model, it would be remarkable. The 1.8L I4 should not have any issue to move this car adequately.

Any info on the platform/suspension? IRS or torsion beam?

Is there a hatch version in the pipeline? So far, I haven't seen any reports on this.
