No it was in Kitchener! I am just a cheasy salesperson that everyone wants to pick on so do not say much. I must say though, since selling Hyundai for a few years now they really are getting more and more exciting.

Ahhh I see. Not sure if you can say... but any word on what the engine will be in the North American market? I know the KDM version gets the 1.6L GDI but I wondered if North America will get something more. Especially when all of the online publications seem to say different things (I've heard 2.0L, 2.4L, and so forth mentioned).

I thought it woulld have been the GDI but they have put in a 1.8 Litre Dual - CVVT WITH 148 hp  and was surprisingly quick. 6 speed auto but will naturally come as a 6 speed standard with a button instead of the old collar to lift for reverse.

Hrmmm... initially disappointing that it wasn't a more advanced engine but 148 hp doesn't sound bad. The 6 speed auto sounds good too.

Surprising that they're going with a 148 HP 1.8l when the basic Kia Forte has a 2.0l version good for 156 HP...  Unless that 1.8 has DI.

Maybe they will offer a different engine option on the higher trims?

Stopped at a Hyundai dealer yesterday, not my dealer but another, and asked the salesguy who picked me up on the floor when the new Elantra was expected in......not until next spring he says.  We all know it's coming sooner, and he was just in typical salesman fashion urging me to get interested in something else now, that he could sell me, rather than wait until 'spring'!  Had a two minute conversaton with him and came away he was either ill informed or treats customers as stupid...with the net at our disposal, we often know a lot more about the very vehicles they are selling!  When is this business going to change!

I totally agree! and the net is the best way to go for info, and I sell cars. You enthusiasts know more than more salespeople. You could have e mailed or asked me when they arrive?

That's true however why don't you just give that information to all of us here? I mean, its much more efficient, and if you can give the information to one person then you can give it to all. This doesn't sound like an embargo topic. Unless you are trolling for leads without saying so, in which case that reinforces the negative opinions of the industry.

Is the 1.8L the only engine available?

Weird that they would take the camo that seriously. We've seen the fully revealed Elantra already... sure there will be some small differences... But seriously. It's probably a PR stunt :)

I guess we'll get to find out the full details next week or so.

I agree.  It definitely looks staged ... lighting, quality of the picture, the cheap weird camo, ect.  The guy is probably an actor. ;D  I just hope it comes with a decent 6-speed manual transmission.

" fabled to break the 40 mpg barrier across the board ". This gives me a huge sad sinking feeling this will be another boredom personified clad with beautiful sheet metal. In other words, no power, no 6 speed manual (with any reasonable, meaning 195 HP+ power).

NEXT?

And the previous Elantra's are anything but? Hopefully the Veloster concept that has been seen testing in so many places, on the same platform, is something interesting for enthusiasts. But this is definitely a consumer level car. Maybe it'll have a top level trim with more power but I'm not really thinking that's going to happen.

The previous ones weren't in my sights at all. I was just hoping, because I think this new one looks great, that there would be an upscale version like most everyone else has, and that it would exceed all the competition in terms of power and torque, like with the Sonata. Hyundai already has several engines that would work, so its frustrating.

Edmunds says 1.6L GDI for the engine! Is that right?

IIRC, all Hyundais will be GDI in the next year or so...

It's been oft repeated that the Elantra would go upscale slightly... But upscale does not have to mean bigger engine. Some have made that assumption before and it doesn't always work that way. If fuel economy is the chief concern and then you want great acoustics, leather, sound and electronic gizmos, and so forth... That can be considered upscale as well.

I do hear you... a more powerful engine to go along with the base (whatever it is - Edmunds says 1.6L GDI and moontune says 1.8L regular) would be a nice touch in a top level or a sport trim.
