Wow - I got some people going, but I have to say knowing that others out there think like me is either flattering or scary.
I generally find Ford - with both the Escape and Edge - have done a good job of maximizing usable cargo room, even if the official numbers are less than their compact/mid-sized SUV competitors..
Honda also has a great idea in the CRV with that dividing shelf, although the weight limit on it would restrict its usability.
I agree with the use of a cargo net or dog bar - I see so many SUVs piled to the ceiling with cargo, only to become lethal projectiles in a collision. If you have to go above the seat backs, make sure it is just pillows and blankets if you have no way of holding it behind the seat.
