The Edge cargo area looks very useable, but its only listed at 31 cubic feet.  Not impressive for a 4000+ lb SUV.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

What's better? 31 cubic feet of very usable cargo, or 35 cubic feet with suspension arches in the way and sloping roof? If find that numbers rarely tell the whole story...

Nope they don't tell the whole story, but a good part of it.  All I said is that 31 cubic feet is not impressive for such a porky SUV, I don't care how useable it is.

Wow - I got some people going, but I have to say knowing that others out there think like me is either flattering or scary.

I generally find Ford - with both the Escape and Edge - have done a good job of maximizing usable cargo room, even if the official numbers are less than their compact/mid-sized SUV competitors..

Honda also has a great idea in the CRV with that dividing shelf, although the weight limit on it would restrict its usability.

I agree with the use of a cargo net or dog bar - I see so many SUVs piled to the ceiling with cargo, only to become lethal projectiles in a collision.  If you have to go above the seat backs, make sure it is just pillows and blankets if you have no way of holding it behind the seat.

Bottom line, all that I think really matters here is how many beer cases can you stuff into these vehicles??   ;D

I'd say it depends how much of the total space (31/35 cu. ft.) is below the seat backs.

 Yes, lets keep our priorities straight!

Actually, my measure is if I can fit my dog's kennel and the suitcases in.  Even better is if the kennel can fit lengthwise front to back.  None of these compact SUVs can accomplish the latter.

We live in a boxy world so the most useable cargo space would be the shape of one. I believe the lift gate really has alot to do with cargo capaciity also. The lift gate on my mazda3 gt really limits the capacity on the trunk. The ford edge vs murano has the same capacity by volume but the edge looks like I could pack more into it with the bluntness of the edges lift gate.

Considering the Edge’s relatively short overall length of 185.7 inches, we find that this vehicle excelled in two of our cargo measurements: It swallowed 48 beer cases (the Hyundai was next with 43), and it accepted a 137.0-inch length of pipe, two inches longer than the Dodge could accommodate.

Again to bring it back to the Equinox this vehicle is in the right price range right now. I guess the Santa Fe would be also.  Anyway Sorry for the off topic and large picture.

I saw in both the Equinox and Terrain at the Toronto Auto Show. The Terrain had an option package that added some leather to the door panels and part of the dash. Looking over the option packages there are some upgrades on the Terrain that do not seem to be available on the Equinox.

I found the Equinox to be a very nice vehicle and it along with the Kia Sorrento and GMC Acadia were my favourite SUVs that I saw there.

8.5 l/100kms real world - is there any question remaining that this vehicle isn't the real deal for FE?
blah blah blah Toyota blah blah blah I feel your pain; you've got a GM, it's worth squat and you owe on it.

Dude, if the displacment is EXACT, it's not "all new".  The intake is different, the VVT is now on both sets of valves  In the automotive world "all new" often means somewhat different

I am wondering where the car was driven, specially if most of the distance was on the highway. This does seem pretty good, but one number cannot be compared if we don't know how it was obtained.

For the most part I drive city, actually I did not go on the highway at all this past week.  A lot of shorter trips to the store and one trip across town to the airport.

This was impressive.

8.5L is extremely impressive. Driver information center give you an average speed? Just curious as our Sentra gets about 9.3L/100kms in town but our average speed is only 38km/h so kind of an indicator as to how much stop and go traffic we're in.
My other Honda is an MP4-31!
