Motoring Memories: Toyota 2000GT, 1967-1970
« on: April 09, 2010, 04:03:17 am »

Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in the fall of 1965, the Toyota 2000GT caused an international sensation. Approximately 350 coupes were built, and only two convertibles, one of which appeared in the James Bond movie, You Only Live Twice.

That's probably THE nicest Toyota I've ever seen - perhaps because it's the most un-Toyota like vehicle they've ever made.  However, it would be nice if they could offer a car like that which appeals to the enthusiast driver, that doesn't come with a Lexus price tag.

I love this car's proportions, and I am impressed that Toyota was able to pull it off over 40 years ago.

That said, I was even more impressed that Datsun was able to offer something that had similar if not better performance, at a price that made it available to the masses....that car being the 240Z.

AND, history repeats itself.  Lexus will be offering up the LFA, which is impressive.  However, Nissan again does Toyota one better by offering the GTR which has better performance at 1/4 the price. Will the GTR ever be as desirable or collectible as the LFA?  Not likely.  But, it makes you wonder what Nissan could do if they sold a car priced $400,000 or more.

Except the 240Z (Fairlady Z to the rest of the world) did not begin production until 1970. It was styled by Goetz, designed by Fumio Yashida and later brought to fruition by Yutaka Katayama (inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1998).

And who says Japanese cars are devoid of emotion... it's beautiful!!

Just a gorgeous car. I remember seeing one for sale in an old issue of the Dupont Registry, and being shocked by a) how Toyota had built such a stunning car and i'd never heard of it, and b) how expensive it was - it was being offered for $250,000!

Hmmm....This car has a Yamaha engine, and was built by Yamaha...Was it even designed by Toyota...or a German?  So...it's really not a Toyota, is it?  Maybe that's why it looks so good....Even today they can't compete with Nissan...dragonfly

Toyota hasn't  built an inspiring sports car since the old Supra and MR2, but i wouldn't dismiss them just yet. The upcoming FT-86 could be a real game-changer.

Just beautiful to look at. 150HP I4 @ 2.0L is still a valid performer today.

Well, the insurance people will have more of say on that. The targeted audience is in the "premium market group", very difficult to sell a high volume with that type of vehicle, regardless how good it is.
