Canada moves forward on renewable fuels

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian government is moving forward with proposed regulations that will require an average renewable fuel content of five per cent in gasoline by September 2010.

“We are fulfilling the commitment we made in 2006 to regulate renewable fuel content in gasoline and have developed draft regulations following consultations with industry, provinces and stakeholders,” said Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment. “This is further action from the Government of Canada to reduce emissions from the transportation sector, which accounts for about one-quarter of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

When fully implemented, the requirements, combined with provincial regulations, will ensure a total volume of renewable fuel that will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to about four megatonnes per year, approximately the equivalent of taking one million vehicles off the road.

The proposed regulations are part of a broader Renewable Fuels Strategy, which also supports further testing on the use of biodiesel to determine the technical feasibility of renewable diesel under a range of Canadian conditions.

The government has a commitment to reduce Canada’s total GHG emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020, which includes stringent regulated standards to progressively tighten limits for GHG emissions from new cars and light trucks over the 2011 to 2016 model years.

So I guess no more pure Shell 91.

Well put for a political PR. What it means of course is adding 5% ethanol (?) in gas will NOT really take 1 mil cars off the road. Reduction of overall harmful exhaust particles - maybe, but I doubt that adding 5% ethanol will reduce CO2 emissions. Count in the energy wasted when growing, harvesting and processing and it will seem Saskatchewan is a no match for Alberta's oil.  ;) Using farm land to grow smth and then burn it instead of eating it is ridiculous IMO.

If the feds really cared about GHG emissions they'd be helping provinces to develop charging infrastructure for electrics just about now...  ::)

 :iagree:

Ethanol derived from corn is a joke economically and environmentally.  It plays well with the simple minded majority who don't even know what ethanol is and have no idea that it raises food prices and operates on hidden GOV subsidies.  Consequently, the GOV pays oil companies to raise food prices on the very ppl that it taxes.

Are not all oil refiners at 10% ethanol presently?

Not to mention losing 5% in fuel economy therefore you use 5% more gas.

I believe we are subsidizing farmers to grow crops for ethanol to the amount of $2 Billion dollars.  It creates a false economy to raise food prices and further subsidize farmers not directly involved in ethanol crops.

It's not about being green, it's about looking green, oh, and taking your money.

We need a good old fashioned drag 'em down free for all on this one - just like those TV guys versus Big Cable. Maybe we can get one of them onside to push our cause. TV guys use electricity and Cable guys use lots of gas so they should care.

Not likely going to happen and we know the farmers position here too. Free money - take a number.
Let's see - for the ad campaign - "Real Men Use (need)  Real Gas" ;D :rofl2:

Ethanol in gas has two minor advantages.  Acts as gas line antifreeze and burns a little cooler which is good for NOx and for turbo engines.  Using food crops for flue is ridiculous ESPECIALLY in a country with a short growing season that has most of its surface area not good for farming.
The people in the US trying to use switchgrass, whatever that is, to produce ethanol have gone quiet....maybe they can't find anything that will eat the stuff and ferment it. The people experimenting with algae to make fuel seem to be successful but are years away from real mass production I think.

If the gov REALLY wants to make us save gas and emissions they could do three things, mostly unpopular:
Put the price of fuel up
Ban the sale of private car and light truck engines greater than 3 litres.
Alter the emissions regulations for diesels to match the ECE regs.
The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

Ain't somebody just got a turban a turbine?  ;D  In terms of overall energy efficiency, with proper coal burning after-treatment, the coal is better and produces less CO2 than gasoline + ICE. It is worth mentioning in ON most "hydro" comes from water dam generators and other renewable sources. In BC it is very similar too, and BC is the primary market for electrics, for climate reasons.
Why does it seem to me the conservatives just play copy cat with the neighbours to the south, instead of working on our own policies? Could they just become big buddies after Obama's "drill, baby, drill", shoot baby shoot, and other adopted republican lines?  5% ethanol... good move! Looks very green, that Camaro green hue that makes me puke  :hurl:
