Modern Classics: Honda S2000, 2000-2009
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:03:47 am »

The Honda S2000 is truly a driver's sports car, says reviewer Jeff Burry. Its remarkable normally aspirated 2.0-litre DOHC VTEC four-cylinder engine produces a whopping 240 horsepower and has a 'redline' of 9,000 screaming r.p.m.s, he says.

Truly one the best Hondas ever made.  Too bad they no longer have a halo car in their line up.

Our local Honda dealer has a 2005 on the showroom "presidents car" . Paint looks perfect in silver grey with leather interior. Shod with some of those tires that look as if they have no tread but do have just a few grooves to keep the law happy.   $28900 asking.

I walked away quickly.   :P

The S2K is such a great car, it does everything very well.  A world class engine, amazing handling, and the best transmission that I have driven.  Truly a very fun driver's car!    :drive:

When it first came out, the MSRP made it less obtainable for many of the enthusiasts who desired the S2000.  The good news is that this car can be found all day long for as low as $14,000, especially here in BC where there are tons of them around because Asians, tuners and ricers simply adored this car.

For those seeking a S2000 as a used buy, make sure that the previous owner was mature and could afford to properly maintain the vehicle.  Also, it's a good idea to look for unmolested, all original cars because here, in BC, the vast majority sport upgrades and modifications which may imply abuse and racing.  Ideally, look for a one owner car.  Expect to pay over $20,000 for the privilege of owning this amazing car.

Longest car I have ever kept in the stable.  I have had mine now since '04 I beat on it constantly and it comes back for more.  Nothing major has failed yet and for the abuse I put it through it remarkable that changing brake pads, tires, oil and adding fuel are the only things it has needed.

Last year it blew a brake line that's the biggest thing that has broke, they were 9 year old brake lines abused hard on the track so I changed them all to SS lines. :)

One of the reasons I loved the Supra so much (and love the S2000).  Will take anything you heap at it and not break.  And if you do break something?  There is TONS of aftermarket support.  Turbos, blowers, big bore kits, suspension,  you name it.

I will own a turbo S2000 someday.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Well I gotta be the first!

I wasn't impressed with it.  When I drove it normally on the street, it felt very, very ordinary.  The Miata felt way more playful.  And the sound of the VTEC lobes switching over?  I thought I broke something...sounded terrible.

I get the feeling you have to beat on this car to make it really shine...which just isn't what I do with my cars.

Shrug...I felt the exact same way when I drove the RX8.  Felt like you had to wail on it for anything to happen...much like an S2000.

IMO you don't get much satisfaction from an RX8 or an S2000 if you're just tooling around in it..

Who on earth would pick a Z3 over anything?  :rofl2:  They're abysmal!

It's one of the finest driving cars I've been behind the wheel in.  Race car handling, perfect pedal position, sublime shifter, amazing steering and built like a tank?  WOW!!

I've always thought the looks plain, but they have aged very well.

The only thing "wrong" with it is that unless it's driven hard, it's pretty tepid.  If you're looking for something with grunt that can driven around in third gear, buy something with displacement.  An S2000 must be kept on the boil and shifted a LOT to bring out the character of this car.

I would prefer a conventional gauge cluster, but the digital one is based on the F1 car of way-back-when, so it has some cool factor in there...

TopGun your comments confuse me because you have an RX8.

I owned and RX8 and then I drove an S2000 and was blown away!  Still love the RX8 but the driver is more sheltered and it just doesn't feel as connected as the S2000 does.

Around town, I'd say both cars are pretty meh, but at least with the RX8 it is quiet and smooth and you can feel like you don't need to push it.  The S2000 cruising feels like you are just pulling teeth it wants to escape from you at any moment.

Can't wait to change the oil on Friday and start her up for the first time this season to hear her purrr.

Yea, me too.  Especially since he's such an "enthusiast" and is always talking about the man/machine interface.. :stick:   I too found the S2000 more connected than the RX8.   I don't think you're "beating" on a car if it's designed with such a high rev limit to begin with...such is the case with both the S2000 and RX8.

Agreed.  If you are simply driving around town, the S2K is nothing special.  But the S2K shines like no other over 6K RPMs and you are certainly not beating on it shifting at 8K.  The S2K continues to impress me more every time I get behind the wheel of mine.   :)
