Test Drive: 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour AWD Navi
« on: January 29, 2010, 04:05:59 am »

Contributing Editor Chris Chase is torn between his dislike of the Crosstour’s styling and the compromises it creates in rear headroom and cargo space - and his enjoyment of the “the overall feel and driving experience it offers.”

I don't know why they just didn't come out with an Accord wagon. It would have a lot more usable cargo area. I find the styling a little odd, with the kind of wedgy and angular front end and the rounded back end. It doesn't look quite right to my eyes.

For Dog owners, this Crosstour is not going to cut it. I own 2 Labrador Retrievers and they would be forever hitting their heads on the glass in this thing. I've heard/read elsewhere that Acura is planning on bringing a TSX wagon to North America. That is something worth considering.

RP speaks for me. Honda makes a brilliant European Honda Accord Tourer (wagon) in diesel/manual- so good that Transport Canada put it on its display at the Toronto show several years ago. As a replacement for our Volvo wagon, I'd take a manual Honda Accord Tourer in a heartbeat; the Crosstour? Not a chance- bloated; ugly; not functional; auto.-only; overpriced. If I wanted a Venza, I'd buy one... and, no, Honda, I do not want the Acura-ized Accord Tourer that Honda is apparently considering bringing over. Ugly and over-complicated and -expensive.

I saw one of these for the first time yesterday on the way hime. All I can say is WOOF

The only thing that could make it any uglier is when they make an Acura version and stick a big bucktooth grille on it. Maybe the grille would distract your eye form this thing's huge AZZ.

Very ugly and overpriced indeed. My guess is that the reason they are not using an Accord wagon is that with this, they can get away with only offering one trim (the highest), and therefore charge more.

I really hope Canadian consumers respond accordingly to this abomination and not buy it.

I think Mazda was the only one to get the whole hatchback thing right with the previous generation 6. Too bad our NA market sucks and we don't have the new hatch here. I need the utility of a hatch, but will not get a wagon, suv, crossover, or whatever they want to call them now.

Honda is targeting empty-nesters with this vehicle.  I think that's the perfect demographic since people's vision usually begins to decline after 50.

Again, Honda answers a question nobody asked.  It's so difficult being a Honda advocate these days.
If I owned a Crosstour, and someone asked me what I drove, I'd need to apologetically reply, "That Honda out front is mine."  and wait for the assault of negative comments to begin.

Honda, please give Honda fans something to cheer about for a change!!  You're killing us!

I understand were you're coming from Chris, because I too am torn about this car.
I'm torn over calling it the Crosstour or the Crossturd?
Yeah I think I prefer Crossturd as well.
For me there is no ambiguity, it's hideous and it's proof Honda has become Buick circa 1997, albeit with better build quality.
When I see it I think of a grossly overweight man, plowing down something deep fried, with a T-shirt about two sizes too small saying "I'm with Stupid".
I won't argue it's not well built or fun to drive, I'm sure it's both, but my god have they lost the plot on this one.
A car were the rear visibility is so bad that you need a bloody camera for backing up? What the hell have we become?
The sad thing is Honda is only reacting to marketplace demand dictated by middle America.
SUV's are not as popular, mini-vans are uncool and station wagons are a no go so we get the crossover which is marketing jargon for fat station wagon on stilts.
"Just give me something that's safe, reliable, with a big engine, lots of room, nice wide seats, cushy suspension - after all those speed bumps at Wal Mart are pretty big - and none of that manual transmission stuff like those freedom hating Euro commies"
"And for god sakes make it as plain as possible with lots of electronic crap to further insulate me from the driving experience"
It is the marketing equivalent to 'fresh frozen' and the people buy into it, incredible.
Years from now car historians will look at the Crossturd, ZDX, Venza, X6, Outback etc and wonder if it was something in the water in 2010 to make them come up with these.

Glad to hear there are others out there that still like a good old fashioned hatchback wagon...+1! Had they made the European Accord wagon here, it would have basically been our Acura TSX wagon, which, except for the stupid beek nose, would have been excellent. I'm not a big fan of Volvo, but I'd take a V70 wagon over this for only $2K more.

It's as though Honda deliberately refuses to bring the vehicles we want over from Europe.  Have you seen the Euro Accord?  It makes ours look like an embarrassing joke.  And the Euro Civic?  And the Euro Accord Wagon?  And DIESELS!!!  Instead we get this abomination.  The Acura version (The ZDX I think?) is just as hideous as this one (meaning CUV, not platform).  It looks the same except a little higher with more power and the usual Acura bells and whistles for 50% more money.  I say this vehicle will fail in sales so much they either kill it or totally redesign it within 2 years.  Honda WAKE UP!

I hope I am wrong, but I can't see this vehicle sell in any significant numbers.

It's just not what Honda stands for.  It is not that useful and practical, doesn't offer a 4 cylinder, and its awkward looking, with a big ungainly rear.

Maybe different is good, but it doesn't have to be this ugly.

The direct cousin in the Acura line to the Crosstour is the ZDX. I have seen a black ZDX in the metal, and IMO it looks better than the CTour. Not great, but better.

I think Honda produced this vehicle in order to compete with an equally ugly vehicle, the BMW X6.

Well, the Acura ZDX version (equally ugly IMO) would be the one to compete with the Bimmer.

I suspect this one is trying to compete with the Venza and perhaps more importantly, amortize some of the development costs over a broader sales base. One hopes that consumers do not follow their usual pattern and purchase Honda vehicles like this just because of the badge. It is truly an abomination -- Honda's Aztek, perhaps.

Will you folks at CanadianDriver please find out why Honda Canada doesn't offer North America their Awesome Accord Touring Wagon equipped with their 2.2 Diesel and 6 speed.  0-60 -8 secs , 130 mph , 55 mpg. .
It would definately give the competition a run for the money and overnight become a Best Seller!! Instead they give us this bloated quasi-luxo fast back at 45+ large.
What has happened to you Honda?

Maybe you should do some research yourself and find out why most euro diesels are no allowed in NA

I think congratulations are in order for Honda/Acura, they are designing some of the fugliest vehicles out there.

You guys are right, who is going to buy this debacle?

I haven't seen the Euro Accord wagon in great detail but if they brought it over with a diesel, I would definitely check it out. (or the ridgeline or element)

I think one reason they don't bring diesels over here is then they would have to spend big money on training their technicians. (plus the US reluctance of diesel cars)

I feel like all those honda designers and engineers who made those good honda vehicles all retired together.
