Absolutely the easiest way to avoid all the red-tape is to buy one that's already been registered in your province. I don't know if it's the long summers or ease of registration, or some combination thereof, but there's plenty of Cobras in BC.

My old man was looking at getting one... found a good deal, but it slipped away, and he hasn't managed to find the right one since. The last one he looked at needed about $5000 in engine work. :/

Yep, thereabouts.  Maybe you've seen (or heard) me driving by.

I was involved in the building of a Canadian Cobra replica (Johnex  http://johnexcobras.com/), and it was both a lot of fun and a pain in the ass. The end result was certainly worth it, and really makes you understand what we have lost in the driving experience in the last 40-50 years. Also, 2 lb doors make you realize how vulnerable you are if t-boned, and the top of my head was always a little higher than the top of the roll bar. But again, nothing equaled the driving experience!

A good friend of mine lived on Nicholson for years East of Mooneys Bay. He said that someone in his hood was building a Cobra years ago and that he would stop in from time to time to mark the progress.
Possibly you?
He drives this around YOW now. Possibly you've seen him. He's down on Quesnel now.

No, that wouldn't be me.  I just bought the Cobra last summer from a guy in the Niagara region.  Superformance Cobras are factory-built turnkey-minus cars, not home builds.  Sounds like there's another Cobra kicking around somewhere in the neighborhood.  I'll hafta keep my eyes open.  And I'll keep an eye out for your friend's green 911, as it should be easy to recognize.

Scarecrow, your Superformance is jaw-droppingly gorgeous!  I've always loved the classic 427 Cobra style... but with the right wheels and the absolute perfect colour scheme, you've got yourself a real prize there!

My god scarecrow, that's the best replica I have seen in a long time!  Superformance cars are pretty amazing, costly, but amazing.  Perfect colour scheme too.

I echo GD's :fiver:

At some point in the future I am going to build a Shelby Daytona Coupe replica, probably the Factory Five one.  I need to research it a bit more to avoid many of the pitfalls you mentioned, but I just hope I can get it done in Canada.  It will be an awesome project...

So I fired up the Cobra yesterday (March 19th!!) and took it out for a three-hour drive, including a quick buzz of the Parliament buildings.  Man, what a blast!   ;D  ;D

Hey uwbrother, have you managed to find a car yet?  Spring is here and the driving is good...

Well if Scarecrow knows of a couple of these projects that are for sale, I'd look into them.

The chaps out in Alberta that are reps for the Factory Five Kits confirmed that the average build cost on a roadster runs about 40-50K and the coupe is a tad bit more than that.  Oh ya...add $10 to $20K  for paint and body work...and you've still got to add about 500 hours of work into it.

Yikes!  What do the Dragons Den guys say?  I'm out...   :run:

Where's your sense of adventure?

Being invested in looking at what else I could get for $70K and spend the 500 hours in the air.

Hmm, $40K was the budget I originally set out with, but you won't find a Superformance Cobra in Canada for that price.  Maybe a resale Factory Five, Shell Valley or other, but not an SPF.

There are currently two SPFs listed on AutoTrader:

That second one seems a bit ridiculously priced, but $70K-75K is probably fair market value depending on engine choice.

You can build a Factory Five for significantly less....

Yeah but the Superformance one is much nicer.  And you pay for their labour.

Is this a Superformance for sale at $55K, or a different make?  If it's an SPF, pls PM with some details.  I have a friend in B.C. who's looking for one and this might be of interest to him.

Yes, no, maybe so.

This totally depends on what kind of build you have planned, which options you go for, how many new (vs used) parts you use, how many tools you need to buy, which tasks you can handle yourself (fabricating, electrical, mechanical/engine work, body prep and paint, etc.) and which you need to outsource, etc.

I made a spreadsheet comparing SPF to FFR (built to my desired spec) and the cost difference was much less than you'd think.  And that was figuring my labour for free.

The truth is most guys who build or restore cars don't really wanna know the true total cost of their cars.  It's a hobby and they do it for fun.
