Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

First, this thread and the story of you realising a dream made me smile like a mutherhugga. (Def: a platonic, respectful hugger of people who may or may not be mums)

Second, I also have added something to my list of, "things my next house must have".

Thank you.

Exactly I zero faith in the limits.  So it says 6k in not going to lift 6k more like 4.  Hence needing 9 to lift 6

Ah ok thats what you mean. I thought you meant that changing tires required an extra 3k lbs over just lifting the car for some reason.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

but don't these get rated based on overload tests?

say a lift is rated for 6000 pounds, then it is tested at 8k lbs, or something life that...

I'm going to have the lift up maybe 1' max to do huge, heavy 20" wheels...so I don't have to lift them.

Yes...I'd do it no problem.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

So where is this great, cost effective hoist (ISO rated, FEA Tested) that's rated for 9-10,000lbs that's made in the USA/Canada?

Do tell.....

Princess auto has a hoist thats rated to 10,000 lbs...Id trust to go under my truck with that, but i wouldnt trust a 6000lb lift with a 6000lb truck.

We were talking about changing tires.

I'd trust a 6,000 lift to change tires.

No problem.

BTW...Dannmar is an American company.  And IF this lift is made in China (is it?) you don't think Dannmar does the FEA and rating on their own?  One accident from failure and this company would be out of business.

I suspect nobody here works in manufacturing.  It's one thing to make a pair of pliers in China and sell them.  It's another to make a piece of equipment like this.  You can go to Dannmar's website and see the test and working loads on their bolts.  They've tested their bolts/anchoring system, but you don't think they've tested the lifts themselves??

Actually, ALI certified....American Lift Institute. http://www.autolift.org

And although lift manufacturers will post that their lifts have been ALI certified, you have to check to see which of their lifts are certified; many aren't. You can check to see which lifts have been certified by the ALI by going to their site and selecting "Directory of Certified Lifts".

Most lifts in the affordable range are not certified. That said, a lift not certified by the ALI simply means the lift manufacturer hasn't done so due to costs and meeting a price point.

I'd be far more worried about the "installation" that the average owner performs. I have done the numbers on my custom installation (stainless steel anchors, 12.9 grade fasteners, etc) and we are talking total overkill.

Amazingly, people will trust a $25 jack stand that is far less substantial in construction and get under their cars. That pin under shear holding 1/4 of the car's weight is a piddly 3/8" in diameter, if that.

Costco's price certainly is good on this unit.  The same one at princess auto is $2599 I was there yesterday looking at it.

I'd also like to park a car under a car on the lift, this won't lift high enough, although it may fit a radical under it.... hehe

I've seen too many "garage fail" youtube clips to park a car under a lift - plenty of them sag overnight.

There are locking pins, they can't sag overnight.  If there are no locking pins, look elsewhere.

If I were to install a lift I would insist on some overkill for sure.  More inches of concrete floor thickness as well as oversized high quality bolts.     Are residential garage floors nowadays a) thick enough and b) installed over a suitable foundation with reinforcing steel mat  to support a 2 post lift safely for a long time?

It is only money and not much of it compared to the price of a house.

I wasn't too concerned about the compressive "load bearing" capability of the concrete slab in my garage, but more concerned with the thickness for the anchors to be effective/safe. I also did not like the idea of bolting/unbolting from an anchor with this being a portable lift. Mind you, in the end, my columns are staying in place. Its just nice to know you can easily move a column if I want to. And owners have been doing so without reports of issues.

Some have had issues with the anchors not grabbing; they probably had the drill wobble while drilling and the hole got a tad bigger. Someone I know had that happen so he opted for special anchors set with epoxy.

The "worst case  - lift arms fully extended" tensile load is 3238 pounds per bolt on the MaxJax. The supplied bolts are 5/8 - 11 which would have a rating ~10 X if they are a grade 8. I used M16 x 2 12.9 grade socket head cap screws which are rated even higher. Overkill! Edited to add: the anchors themselves are rated for 16500 pounds each, so roughly 5X (16500/3238)

MaxJax Specifications and Load Analysis: http://www.maxjaxusa.com/specifications.html

This isn't going anywhere...

As far as the lift structure is concerned, when a 1/4" aircraft cable can hold up a car and almost the heaviest truck, I'm not too worried about some 12 inches of weld (the section under tension) not being 100%.

Yeah a lift installer told me to just use epoxy with anchors it won't go anywhere.

Yep.  And IF it didn't have pins (not sure why it wouldn't), you could put a 4x4 wood under a corner....and that wouldn't go anywhere.
