Another winter project completed. OK, so I started late February; I'm getting old and not as motivated to spend time in a cold garage. As a result of six weeks touring the Alps on my motorcycle, I didn't get on the road till I got back in July.

Twelve new spark plug wires, two new coil wires and a dual-distributor rebuild. The spark plug wires were almost sixteen years old and the insulation had cracks anywhere there was a tight radius bend. I made my own ignition wires using Beru cable and M3 terminals. The Beru crimper produced professional crimps. The distributor has a toothed drive belt and was just as old...the secondary distributor is driven off the primary distributor.

I've said this before, you better know how to wrench on one of these or have deep pockets for dealership servicing. Replacing the plugs wires was time consuming, especially when I got right into it and ended up cleaning the engine bay and all parts in detail. These engines are really quite simple even though the engine compartment looks busy when everything is in place.

All cleaned up for another sixteen years...

And no left over parts or fasteners. It started first shot.  :)
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!
A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!
A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

For those considering a car lift, do it. You will not regret it.

After a couple of years of going back and forth trying to decide between a scissors lift and a two-post lift, I went with the MaxJax Two Post Portable Lift. The MaxJax was chosen because I wanted unobstructed access to the bottom of the vehicles I would be working on. They each have their advantages and disadvantages.

I ordered my MaxJax Two Post Portable Lift from Costco late June2012, received it early July and had it up and running, mid December (due to my custom installation). Costco has the lowest price in Canada and it includes free shipping to your door. I was lucky that the trucking company sent a truck had a lift gate; maybe all residential deliveries include that service.

Unobstructed access to the bottom of the vehicle...

I cannot believe how pristine your car is. Congrats to a deserving owner.
I love your lift. How much if you don't mind me asking? I'm sick of jacks, ramps and never having full, clear access (plus never fully trusting the jack stands, ramps and chalks on the wheels, lol).

A truly beautiful car. Enjoy. :-)

Advantage to these lifts are 110volt and somewhat portable but not really.  Disadvantage is they don't lift super high and weight is restricted.

Big boy lifts are actually less money but require install and 220v wiring.

I got a high lift kit in the garage so I could put a lift on but keep putting off the list install for some reason.  Maybe I should just get one of these lifts and be done with it....

They lift 6,000 lbs!!  How much more do you need?

Well my truck weights 5995lbs.  If I'm going to use it to change tires on my truck I need 9000lbs lift

Wow, extremely clean car....But i think I am even more envious of your lift. Can you tell me what the width of that lift's footprint is??

I love your lift. How much if you don't mind me asking?

I paid $2199 at Costco back in June of 2012. A few months later they dropped the price to what it is now, $1999. That is a damn good deal considering it includes shipping to your door.

The best pricing I got out of the US was US$1899 including shipping within the US. By the time I rented a pick-up truck, paid for the mileage, the gas and struggled with a 900 pound crate...it just was not worth it.

My custom installation brought the price up quite a bit. Many told me it'll survive a nuclear strike. I trust my installation more than the MaxJax itself.

I still use my trolley jack and jack stands for the daily driver for day jobs.

Well we know where all of these consumer lifts are made and the quality could be better, including the powder coat.

Don't tempt me.

Disadvantage is they don't lift super high.

Having worked under a full sized consumer lift, you can't stand straight up under any of them unless you are short. At 188 cm, I'd need a real lift, the ones found in dealerships.

TIP, if you have a standard sized 20 x 20 garage, install the lift columns more towards the back wall of the garage. Then park more towards the garage door end of the garage. I can fully swing the driver's door open without contacting the lift column. I also installed one column right next to the wall. That one would stay in place while the lift column at the center of the garage can me moved out of the way if needed.

Can you tell me what the width of that lift's footprint is?

You mount the columns based on a range of vehicles you think you will be working on...usually personal vehicles.

The outside edges of my column plates are 130 inches apart. Other local 993 owners that have the same lift had them at 120 inches and 132 inches apart.

The columns can be apart as far as you want, but limited by the length of the hydraulic hoses. The moments won't change. MaxJax has recommendations in their manual based on vehicle type.

Vehicles should be placed to reduce fore and aft moments on the columns. Many cars are relatively well balanced, but since the 993 isn't, I did a C of G calculation for my 993 based on a datum point that I picked. In any case, I can center my car physically or center it about the C of G. My installation and fasteners that I used are overkill.

I hope I answered everybody's questions. If not, PM me.

Here is a YouTube video of one of my first lifts...

And a few pics of one of my first "under-car" jobs...in comfort.  ;D The one fluid I hadn't changed, (and who does) is the power steering fluid.

Fasteners to be removed to drop the front end cover...

Access to the power steering lines...

Forgive me but how does changing tires take it from 6k to 9k?

Also, at least for 5995 vs 6000....how much faith do you have in "engineering margins"? ;D

Exactly I zero faith in the limits.  So it says 6k in not going to lift 6k more like 4.  Hence needing 9 to lift 6
