By the way, do you intend on auto-crossing your 993? That can be really fun (if you haven't done so before already).

Most probably not; I'm not rich enough. But I will get a friend of mine who is a Porsche driving instructor to take me around the track just so that I can experience what the car is really capable of.

Are you anywhere within a reasonable drive to Picton, Ontario?
May 16th, Picton Airport, only $25.

"Scary (porsche) rides are free?"  Does that go for me too?  Could maybe, possibly be in the area then.  Started searching for a set of used wheels that'll fit my car that I can put some rubber I don't mind shredding on.  The stupid runflats are not made for fun runnin'.

I always run 225 fronts on 7" rims.  How wide are your front rims?

Stock (17" option) are 7" on the front and 9" on the rear. The previous owner had the 8" & 10" x 18" thin spoke Carrera? wheels on the car and the front tires at 225 would "just" rub the dirt off the wheel well.

Unless there is an OEM steering stop available to reduce the angle, I'm sticking with stock sizing.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

Yup, depending on what wheels I have on 225's just barely rub the dirt off on one side on mine at full lock.  Yours might be fine with the stock wheels and 225's, very likely so with the 215, depends on the backspacing.
Don't know about steering stops.Maybe check with fellow 993 owners to see if they would rub with a stock setup if you ever want to go that way.

Also, while the Michelins you want are certainly top of the line tires, similarly to the Direzza Star Spec, there are a few other tires out there that will outperform the Michelin in the dry (and maybe the wet) mostly at the expense of wear.  Most of these are available in 215/45-17, but not much at all in 205/50-17.

Come on out, should be a good time with lots of rookies.
I was there all day today for a Test'n'tune. Maybe next time I'll even drive instead of doing all the work.

Light is good, run-flat's are heavy.

Don't know about steering stops.

I'll look into those.

The Carrera started right up today for the first time since winter lay-away last November.

No leaks from any of the valve cover seals that I replaced, but the engine was running differently. Upon double checking the spark plug wires and fuel injection connectors, I found that the no 2 fuel injection connector was not fully connected to the injector. They cannot be pressed on without first pressing the stainless steel spring clip retainer. I knew that but must have been tired when I reconnected them.

Runs perfectly now that that has been rectified.  :)

I can't wait to take it out for a spin this week. That is what is good about winter; everything feels like a new toy in the spring.

It was an exciting day exactly one year ago as I took possession of my first Porsche.

Since then I've enjoyed working on it and detailing it as much as I have driving it. No regrets!

Porsche sprays a hard-waxy coating on the aluminium parts to counter corrosion due to road salt. Its messy, dirty looking and since I do all my own wrenching, I decided to wash it off as a few owners have. Besides, this is a toy that hasn't seen rain yet.

By the way, Xenit Citrus Cleaner & Remover is a great product by Stoner.
http://www.cleanitwithxenit.com

Its nice to see the aluminium suspension carrier, wishbones and links as well as the wheel well all cleaned up...

I on the other hand, I think sports cars should be used and abused in all weathers.

Bob, I'm not that well off. I have to make what I have last...look at my eleven-year-old CR-V.

Bob, if you had one of those back home, why not here?

Because I now have two kids money sucking offspring that devour resources at an unimaginable rate that ceases perhaps upon university graduation, I pray.  However, wouldn't change it for the world and it's worth every dollar times a thousand and better than any car, vacation or other fleeting object.

Fixed that for ya...   ;)

On an invitation, I drove up to the Calabogie track today and was given a ride by one of the Porsche club driving instructors in his 993 (same model year as mine). This was a first for me.

All I can say is WOW and what a different world out on the track. These things go and corner quite well for a fifteen year old car. These cars belong on a track.

The experience left me  ::) when I see street racers who think they are fast. They should go to the track to find out how slow they really are.

A big thanks to those that made this happen. A nice group of people!

One thing track driving teaches you is all that "fast and furious" crap with abrupt throttle/brake inputs and see-sawing of the wheel is slow, garbage driving.  Fast is smooth and precise.

A real advantage of a 911 is the rear weight bias allows the rear tires to really bite hard under braking and acceleration.  You can brake so deep into corners it's shocking.  You have to be careful trailbraking to set the outer front tire, smooth through the bend, but once past the apex, you can put the power down hard.

And that is what I noticed yesterday as the instructor was taking me through five demo laps. It was pure joy seeing how everything came together.

I'll check out some on-line videos of the track to jog my memory as to its layout.

you did see that driver sawing at the wheel in that 911 vs corvette video right?

If you watch the car, you'll see that it is moving around very little.  Justin is keeping the car in a steady-state.  If you get out with a so-called "hot-shot" you'll see a lot more whipping of the wheel and the car moving much more abruptly on the track.

In the video, the 911 is obviously not as planted as the Corvette.  The chassis team at Chev has done their work very well...

Like Clarkson. ;D I am still amazed how unsettled that Porsche Turbo appeared to be.

I'm surprised the other way.  A street car that doesn't knock your dental work out typically bobs around quite a bit on the track.  The Corvette looked so composed!  More like a race car.  The chassis engineers at Chevrolet have their best working on that car, no doubt.  Anyone can make a car handle, but to make a road car that can ride in reasonable comfort and then put 600hp+ down and make it look easy!  Daaaaaamn.

I guess it depends which video you watch.

The one of the 7' 15" Porsche Nurnburgring round, that driver and the car are smooth. In comparison, those records in a Viper and Vette, they look like they are driving over their limits...loose and uncomposed in most corners.
