...because some of us are young enough that we don't have to get up halfway through the night to pee  ;D

The list of great music from 1990-1999 is endless, but here are three nominations:

Smashing Pumpkins--Disarm:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQtLoJlQD6E

Red Hot Chili Peppers--Under the Bridge:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1N_JDqHOZ8

Nine Inch Nails--Closer:  NOT WORK SAFE  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVgBuwM9zcQ  NOT WORK SAFE

I can almost agree with you.

1979:  Dire Straits, Joe Jackson, The Cars,...

1980s:  Technopop and big hair

But it gave us bands like Simple Minds, U2, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Peter Gabriel solo work, Big Country, Eurythmics, ...

1990s:  More ridiculous "gangsta" rap (my posse is bigger than yours!) plus a lot of talentless drones who can cut a CD for a fraction of the cost of a 1970s studio album

But it gave acts like The Payolas, Tracy Chapman, the rise of Celtic and Gaelic music (Clannad, The Rankin Family,...), ...

In short there has always been good music; you just have to dig for it sometimes. ;)

Favourite song of the 80's? Sugarcubes - Birthday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH54A61VC0s&feature=related

No wait, maybe it was Camper Van Beethoven - Eye of Fatima: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3vJEDL1iDA

Favourite song of the 90's has to be Soundgarden - Outshined: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x19hpu_soundgarden-outshined_music

Although, Blur - Parklife is a close second: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKCoBt43HWE

And, may as well get it over with: the two favourites of the 00's are, so far:

TV on the Radio - I Was a Lover. But, there's no video, so Province will have to stand in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqI0FYN-r5c&feature=related

and, Hot Chip - Down With Prince: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1ZvMdL74kk .

With Or Without You from U2's The Joshua Tree is the best song on the best album of the 80s, period. Running a close second is Midnight Oil's The Dead Heart from the album Diesel And Dust and Biko by Peter Gabriel.

Best song of the 90s? I'm thinking, I'm thinking... ;D

Oh my god, I'm trapped in a retirement home and it's shuffleboard hour

ovr50--"headbanger stuff"?  Did you listen to any of the songs I posted?  I can see you not liking the NIN--industrial is an acquired taste--but "Disarm" and "Under the Bridge" are about as far away from metal as you can get.

Schmengie--given your musical tastes, I'd be shocked if you didn't love Live's Throwing Copper.  Particularly "Lightning Crashes."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsOculxtdX8  I'd also be surprised if you didn't like Dave Matthews or the Chili Peppers.  Both are genre-bending and just plain talented.

Here's Living Colour off my favourite 90's album "Stained" with "Leave It Alone".  The bass work of Doug Wimbish is fantastic.

Their prior album "Time's Up" gave us this gem "Elvis is Dead".  I love Will Calhoun's drumming in this tune.

I, for one, loved all your choices.  "Closer" has to be the world's dirtiest song - even the beat is raunchy!  >:D  And, I've got both the standard and unplugged versions of "Lightning Crashes" on my iPod, as well as Dave Matthews' "Crash".  For Red Hot Chili Peppers, I've got "Higher Ground," "Dani California" and "Snow."  Lots of Green Day, too.

What's interesting to me is how difficult it is to define the 90s sound (other than the grunge movement with Nirvana and the gang).  To me, it was the decade where genres started to fragment, and newer music began to defy any categorization.

Not really raunchier, I guess, but you might get a laugh out of this.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTW8oUV8Aq0

I'd agree and disagree.  I think that fragmentation had been going on since perhaps the 70s--I mean, what does Joy Division have in common with CCR or the Bee Gees?  But I do think that the 1990s were the most fractured yet.  Two bazillion different genres.  At least for me, though, when I think of the 1990s, I tend to think of mainstream hard rock of the decade--everything from Seven Mary Three to Smashing Pumpkins to later Metallica offerings--but maybe that's just because I spent the entire decade listening to Top 40 Rock stations ;)
