VW unveils GTD, diesel-powered GTI
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:34:38 am »
Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off its diesel-powered GTD ahead of its AMI in Leipzig debut next month. As the name implies the GTD is essentially a diesel-powered version of VW’s hot GTI hatch. SUch a model has been rumored since late last year.

The GTD use VW’s 2.0L TDI powerplant, tuned to produce 170 horsepower and 258 b-ft of torque. That power will be sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or VW’s six-speed DSG gearbox.

Although not as quick as its GTI counterpart, the GTD will make the sprint from 0-62 in 8.1 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 136 mph. The GTD uses only 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, which roughly translates into a combined 44 mpg.

Despite the oil-burner up front, the GTD still shares plenty of DNA with its GTI counterpart. The GTD employs 17-inch wheels, a sports-tuned suspension and upgraded brakes. The GTD uses the same front fascia as the GTI, but sports a chrome grille accents instead of red.

Inside the GTD features sport seats and a three-spoke steering wheel with a flattened bottom. A unique black headliner distinguishes the GTD from other Golf models.

The GTD will hit the German market sometime this summer — with a base price of 27,475.00 Euros — but it remains unclear if VW will market the GTD in the States. However, VW is already pushing its diesel technology on the American public in the form of the Jetta TDI, so it remains possible that we could see GTD on our shores in the not-too-distant future.

There have been GTDs in Euland for some time.

IF diesels really catch on here and I hope they do,  it always was a nice car. GTI level of trim with a economical diesel engine.

If this was already available when we bought our GTI it would have made for a really tough decision.

Personally I don't think it will make it here though. Look how long it has taken to bring back just a regular Golf TDI. It is still coming this fall right?

It sounds nice. Very appealing.

Unfortunately if it does come it will likely be slapped with a very high premium.

A 5 door with a stick starts at 29K today. Add a 2.5 to 3 K premium at least for a diesel that while efficient is considerably slower (remember this is a top of the line performance model) Are we looking at a starting price over 32 K? Optioned out are we hitting 40K for a Rabbit GDI?

Maybe people will pay that but that premium is equivalent to almost 1.5 year worth of gasoline.

That said I guess if you are a diese person this would be a nice option to have

Don't think the new GTIs look different enough from the regular Golfs. Also, wish they had made them the same with just powertrain changes, as the loss of red Interlagos and exhausts at either side of the rear are disappointing.

From what I've heard, Canada is getting a Golf 'Sportline' which should be close enough to a GTI anyway. Imagine it would include stuff from today's Sport Package plus sport seats this time, and if available in diesel that'd be enough for me.

Too bad the 170hp isn't planned for North America - or not announced yet. In the Tiguan it actually nets better mileage than the 140hp version.

A diesel GTI?
Nonsense!
Half the fun of a GTI is the free revving engine.

We're still getting the 140hp version. Chip that at you're at 170. Done deal.

Any news on other powertrains like a gas turbo 4?

The Mk6 GTI will have the 2.0 turbo at 207 bhp.

Yes of course. I was thinking about a regular Golf though. And apparently the new engine will have the same hp ad the outgoing GTi and in line with the Scirocco. Why? Beats me. ???

Why not?   207 bhp is enough for normal use....and it can be made up to nearly 300 with a chip and exhaust.

What I was trying to say was that the NA GTi will carry a slightly detuned version of the EU spec 2.0T. The EU has 207bhp while the NA will have 197bhp.
Eitherway the MK6 GTi is losing in the horsepower war.
