Next Gen VW Passat

My god it's freakin' gorgeous!

http://www.motorauthority.com/preview-2011-volkswagen-passat.html

It's only a rendering but:

Personally I don't think they can compete with BMW unless they are RWD.

Looks nice.  Wouldn't it be competing against Accord and Camry instead of BMW?

Front end is kinda sinister looking and that's a good thing. RWD - not sure it would sell or be needed. AWD would be the option.

Let's hope this one comes with 5 seats instead of 4....  ::) I'm assuming this is the Euro made version.

Any news on the dumbed down US made version that VW wants to roll-out in 2011-12 as a volume seller ? Apparently that one is supposed to be cater for US consumer tastes by being bigger than the current Passat, no turbo, 'simpler' interior ergonomics and a softer ride.

Very nice lines indeed.  Hopefully they will retain some sanity when it comes to pricing.

Sweet looking car.  Wonder how close the production model will be compared to this rendering.

Yes, I don't think we're even going to get that. We'll have the NA only NMS -midsize sedan-, the Jetta, and the CC in terms of sedans.

I was in a VW showroom last week. This looks like it has a lot more in common with the CC than this year's Passat.

I thought the Jetta was going downmarket. Why would the Passat go up?

Plus, that's Audi's lunch!

Slight premium to HonToy sure but 3 Series and A4? Err...

In Europe it already competes with Accord (TSX), A4, C-Class, and 3-Series much moreso than here (or at least the Euro magazines did comparison tests at intro with those competitors), so there's not much movement there.

I'd like to know how airless tires and wiperless windshield will work and look like.

A Passat going for A4 money makes as much sense to me as a Camry going for ES350 money.  Which is to say, not a lot of sense at all.

A Camry and ES are similar size, while a Passat is larger than an A4 and dynamically different as well. So it's more like comparing ES with IS, but I gather you're saying Passat is nowhere near ES levels of luxury.

Well,I was in a Highline CC last week and in terms of interior at least it easily seemed the equal of a Lexus ES

No - I'm saying that Audi is supposed to be an upscale brand as compared with VW. I appreciate that the Passat and A4 are not precisely equivalent in size - but if I were looking for a premium sedan and wandered into a VW showroom to check out a shiny new Passat, only to find out that I could get an A4 for the same money, I would get the Audi.

Even in Europe I don't think a VW or a Honda has the same cache as a BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

They do a lot of questionable comparos over there, recently AutoBild compared a Golf 6, an Astra and an 118D with comparable engines.

Astra 24.5E
BMW 26.5E
Golf 26.1E

I know they're in the same class and everything, but the Astra and the Golf looked like a top-end models, while the BMW was somewhere between base and mid-line.
