I agree with the "Ford is headed in the right direction" sentiments, that is why I gave a thumbs up.

Bob, how does a European Focus compare to a NA sedan?  I am missing your point here somehow.  I understand that Ford does make some very nice cars we do not see in NA (as noted in many other threads already  ;) ) but lets keep comparing limes to limes.  Now if you had pointed out a similar-to-Taurus but from Ford Europe, then I can see your point.

And ovr has it right, lets wait and see if it will indeed be a BMW crusher as some in the motoring press are saying.  Remember the poor man's BMW?  Datsun 510.  Or the European tuned Monarch (my Dad had one   ;D )?  But frankly, I do not see many people cross shopping a Taurus, even the SHO, with any 5 series BMW.

Certainly this is an extremely good effort from Ford and I can only give them a thumb up.

Maxima and Genesis are the only cars that I can think of being Taurus direct competitors when factoring in the performance. The Avalon, Impala are old designs and the Allure, I'm not sure if it is a full-size car. What else is out there that I'm missing?

Why people compare it to the bimmer? This is a good effort from Ford, doesn't matter who it will compete against. I don't think that buyers with a 550i on the list will have a look at the Taurus.

Why not? I don't see how it won't leave a 550i in the dust, and for $20k less. Why not advertise that?

Straight line acceration may be close; but the rest of the handling/performance package is a big question mark in the Ford I would say. Matters not at this stage, let's see if this new SHO really sees the light of day.... 8)

I'm not talking about performance only, but it includes brand perception also.

BTW, hey, I love Ford, don't bash me, ehehehhehe. :P

Trainman I was only referring to the bland styling effort, not the segment.

Why does everyone just quote stats at each other, surely there's more to being a BMW beater than the spec sheet.

And what Saf said about orange.

With almost all cars of its size having really powerful V6 engines it doesn't seem as special as the first SHO which had at least twice the horse power of its era's average sedans. Oh and a manual gear box too. Solid meh from me.

Remember this series of Hyundai commercials.
Of course they don't say anything about handling, and neither should Ford but if you have something that goes against a BMW (let alone a 550i) then people want to hear it. That thing sells.

VW had one too. The Passat Turbo faster from 0-60 than a 525i.

Yeah but at the end of the day it's still a Passat...

AFAIK it's a detuned 3.0 but anyways.. why not? Many don't care about the engine.. all they care about is a 5 series.. I HAVE A 5 SERIES they brag..

Yes but it sells, BMW is the benchmark, chip it and it's faster than a 330i too..

IMO it is like bolting a 4.3 into a C6. Why marginalize the brand for a few poser sales, go buy a 325, we will still call you a poser  :)

A 525 might be underpowered by yours or my standards, but the car is all about "balance". The engine is "adequete" but if a BMW buyer is in need of more power, there are lots of choices in the 5 Series. The whole argument here is not relevant anyway, as you cannot get a 2.5L engine in a 5 Series in NA today. I believe you can in Europe tho.

A friend had an older 5 Series with the 2.5L engine and it was a decent car, but not a 0-60 cars. BMW doesn't emphasize the 0-60 stuff as much as ppl in this country do.

Hell, my car is only a 3.0L but not too many ppl think a 535 is underpowered today.  ;)

Yes, and it's a 3.0L but normally aspirated. And I agree, it's certainly fine for the majority of owners. Just not some of us on here.  ;)
