If this comes to Canada, I have a feeling it would be around the $40,000 mark.
STi and EVO pricing with a more refined interior.
Worth it?

With NO AWD???  Soooo not worth it....

I guess it depends on AWD since the article seems unsure...

K04 turbo kit = S3 w/o AWD

I don't see the point of making it FWD.. if it's supposed to take R32's place then AWD it must be.

Why not get a chipped GTI and save some money?

$40k.. hmm.. and A3 Quattro is $37k and it's an Audi and all... they gotta lower the price, considering a GTi starts at $30k.. make this one $33-$34k..

IIRC VW said there'll be a few variants of the GTi this time, same engine - different outputs and drivetrains. It should be interesting.

Vehicle may be called the GTI R.

Should be a fun car because it should be lighter than the R32 it replaces.

From the above link:
The spec list should look like this — VW's current 2.0T turbo four-cylinder pumped up to a brawny 270 horsepower, channeled through a manual or dual-clutch-auto six-speed transmission, and dispatched to the asphalt via 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Just wondering why would it be the 6-speed DSG when you can have the base Golf with a 7-speed today?

But yeah, lighter and more powerful and AWD sounds like just the right recipe.
Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth

Maybe the newer 7 speed:-
can't quitedo 270 bhp and whatever torque figure goes with that reliably
physically doesn't fit with the AWD clockwork in the Golf bodyshell.

pure supposition on my part.

This vehicle would be fantastic.

Use high-performance summer tires to have a blast during the warm months. :popo:

Slap on some winter tires for sure-footed traction in the snowy season! :o

VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive takes care of the rest! ;D

The new 7-speed DSG can actually handle more torque than the 6-speed DSG.

I wonder if the R20T will fully replace the GTI?

Although it still earns very good reviews, most articles I've read typically mentioned that the VW is getting outgunned in the compact horsepower wars.  Now that the 2.5 liter is up to 170 hp in the 'regular' Golfs, perhaps this will be only turbo GTI...
Internal combustion thrust I trust

VW has already announced the new GTI.  The R20 or whatever it will be called, will replace the R32.

Besides, haven't cars like the SRT4 always offered more outright power for the dollar?  The GTI is largely about refinement, subjective driving pleasure, and the "total package" more than outright objective performance figures.

Roger. So, it's a niche player, a la Integra Type-R or STi.

Do you know what numbers the R32 sold in?   I have literally only seen one on the road, and it did look schweet!

Indeed.  The GTI seems to have equal proportioning in all the performance corners.  Great video btw, thanks for sharing.

While I would not expect VW to go bonkers on HP in the way Dodge did with the the SRT4, it's likely time to turn things up a bit.  Nevermind Honda with the Civic Si...

You'd be unlikely to see many here as they were not sold here.

Probably because it isn't sold in Canada.

As for sales numbers, the R32 is a limited-edition car.  5000 for the United States, and each one numbered (not sure if that's per year or per generation).  There's one here in Ashland.  I love it.
