Colorado winter driving rules?
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:13:32 am »
Does anyone know firsthand if Colorado has laws/rules to restrict the access in the ski resorts area to 4WD vehicles or requires chains on FWD during the winter time?
I know in some states, for certain roads, during the winter time they do that.

The reason I'm asking is because a compact SUV rental is 4 times higher than a compact or mid-size. If it's not a must (by law) to have 4WD I would not spend the money unnecessary.

I would call the resort and ask.

The last time I was there they did have signs/flashing light in the passes to indicate that winter tires and/or chains were mandatory.

So I'm thinking it is area dependent although to get into most ski areas you will probably have to cross at least one pass.
