Test Drive:
2009 Honda Civic Sport sedan

2009 Honda Civic Sport sedanNew for 2009, the Civic Sport replaces the mid-level LX trim.  "Not everyone needs the Civic Si and its higher capabilities and price," says contributor Gerry Frechette.  The Sport is "a little more capable and classier than the base model."

Not a fan.

I'd rather sacrifice a bit of interior room and fuel economy for a Mazda 3, if I wanted "sportiness".

The Civic is a very nice package, the car is beautiful to drive and is very peppy. However, this "Sport" package is not worth an extra $4500 in my opinion. I doubt they will have much trouble selling a whack of them though.

Sounds like Honda has thrown in the towel on the Civic as a mainstream sedan and instead has begun to cater to the wannabe "tuner" crowd who cannot afford a SI. On the bright side, I imagine the resale on these in a few years time to high school kids will be very high. Maybe I should buy stock in a company that makes fart pipe exhausts and "No Fear" windshield decals...  ::)

So, having said that, where the rubber meets the road, does the Civic Sport measure up to its name? It would be fair to say that no other compact sedan in its price or specification range exceeds it in either objective or subjective measure of sportiness.

That is quite the statement I think. NO OTHER COMPACT SEDAN? Really, for only $21,580 I'm sure many of us could find others.

Isn't it funny what now makes a car sporty?

60/40 split-folding rear seat with centre armrest
leather-wrapped steering wheel
16-inch alloy wheels
variable intermittent windshield wipers
remote entry system with electric trunk release
auto-up/down driver’s power window
USB device connector
map lights
exterior temperature indicator
rear cup holders
AM/FM/CD/MP3 four-speaker set-up

...and what may be the sportiest feature of all to some people and certainly the most individually expensive: a power glass moonroof

I would expect all those (and more) on any $21K car.

Sigh $4500 for a sport package that gives you 16 inch wheels with A/S mid performance tires , slightly more fade resistant brakes (not bigger or more powerful) and a sunroof?

I have to differ on the opinion of a Civic "sportiness" its a nice car. Its certaionly more sporty than a Corolla but back to back with a Mazda 3? HMMMMM

You're missing out on such a wonderful car. I love my Civic. It has been a joy to own. 2 years of trouble free motoring. Not single rattle either. It just big e-nuff without the need to be bigger. Recently I just got tad under 800 clicks out of tank of gas. Which I can't believe. Also it been sitting in airport carpark for just under a week and I was surprised that started first time on the button when you consider how cold it has been as of late. ;)

However there is one negative. Your need to buy a duster The massive dash needs constantly dusting. :)

I think Peugeot.   :)

Why did they put a plastic strip on the back. I think I like my Civic without it.

Honda needed an entry to go against the Corolla XRS (only about $500 more than the Civic sport) and Mazda 3.

LMAO, I take the author of this article is new to the car world to consider that a few very common features make the Civic "sportier"...  :rofl2:
Can you imagine how a fart can and big spoiler would make a Civic a down right performance car?

It is the biggest selling car in North America, Greg, so what makes you come to this conclusion?

Honda is introducing this package to add profit to the line, which is kind of the whole object of making cars for sale. There is not $4500 in content in this package but I am sure they will sell plenty of them. For the rest of us, there is the DX-G which, being the biggest selling model in Canada, is pretty mainstream. That is if you can equate sales figures with what is "mainstream."

These is new for the '09 models.  Not a fan of it either... I prefer the body colour of our models.  Other changes for '09 are refreshed head and tail lights, as well as new grill and lower air flow ducts.

The Civic's are great cars, however, for this money, the Civic "Sport" should have the 2.4l engine from the base Accord (177hp).   Then it would really be well positioned between the regular Civic and Si.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

It is a different block and it won't fit. Hondas are engineered to very fine tolerances which is the reason they are so light. However, this is the reason that engine swaps are not possible. Unlike GM's Ectoech series, Honda engines are not interchangeable.

I disagree.  The Acura CSX comes with a 2.0l engine (K20 series) that shares all hard mounting points with the 2.4l engine (K24).  We all know that the CSX is a Civic (save some misc. trim bits, etc.).  As such, in the Civic the 1.8, 2.0 (a la CSX) and 2.4 will fit.

IMHO, Honda would broaden the appeal of their Civic should they take a page from the Mazda, Nissan and Toyota playbook by offering mutiple engine displacement offerings.

Why not put the 2.0 L Acura engine in since they are already doing it for the CSX for Canada only. Its not like it would be a big change but it would go alot farther towards justifying a sport tag than Sunrooms and intermitent wipers
